Diamine Grape - Montblanc Violet Quick Comparison

It has been reported that Montblanc has pulled its Violet/Lavender Purple (VLP) ink off the market in much the same way it discontinued the much beloved British Racing Green. I have had one bottle of the MB Violet for about three years, and have used about half of the bottle in that time. I think it is a great ink, but obviously I am not a heavy user of this color if it takes me six years to go through one bottle.

I began thinking about a suitable replacement for MB VLP, even though I still had a couple year supply of the ink in my current opened bottle. I am also a big fan of Diamine inks so I searched the Diamine catalog for a suitable replacement color in their selection of 100 ink colors. Diamine Grape seemed like a good match. A couple of weeks ago I ordered an 80ml bottle directly from Diamine as I always do and it arrived in the mail today. I have put together a quick and dirty comparison of the two inks, and I found that they are similar in many ways.

The Diamine Grape is everything I hoped for, and I would be happy using it as my dark purple ink from this time forward. Both inks had many positive qualities, and neither had any real negative qualities.

I am not very good at describing fine differences in colors, but the MB VLP seems to have more a blue tint compared to the Diamine Grape which looks more reddish. Hopefully my scan picks up the color differences between the two inks.

In any case, I think that Diamine Grape is a suitable if not exact replacement for MB VLP.

The Montblanc seems a tad bluer. I love Diamine Grape but have been smitten by Biberry!

What gramage is that staples pad?

Would a better paper give shading of either?

They look almost identical to me. Ah well, you do have 6 years to come up with a perfect replacement, so don't despair. MB might introduce your PERFECT purple within those 6 years. In the meantime, why don't you experiment with Black Swan In North African Violets? Search for the recipe here, get yourself some sample sizes of Noodler's Heart of Darkness and North African Violets and have a ball. I think you will be highly entertained by it's shading and lovely color!

Nice color and nice review  thanks for sharing

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Diamine Damson, Amethyst or Imperial Purple might also be suitable alternates. I'm partial to Private Reserve DC Super Violet and P.W. Akkerman Voorhout Violet, though neither are particularly close to being the same colour as MB Violet/Lavender.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
