The 10 Most Expensive Pens In The World

I think this link (or a similar one) has floated around FPN before.

All things considered, that Tibaldi Crew 60th pen wasn't *too* horrible looking (at least as compared to some of the others). For some reason, though, the page only partially loaded for me, so I don't know if I saw all the ones on the top ten -- or should we say "bottom ten" -- list.

I do remember a while back seeing some pen designed to look like London's Millenium Tower (which looked unbelievably top heavy -- as well as unbelievably gaudy); and I also remember seeing a pen named for Paul Coehlo (sp?) and his book _The Alchemist_ which looked similarly unergonomic and sort of pretentious (and the 18K barrel rollerball version was, IIRC, more expensive -- at $105K US -- than the FP version).

Blecch. The prices on Yard-O-Led Viceroy Victorians don't look so bad in comparison (and those are *much* more attractive pens); even custom Nakayas seem affordable and while I don't think I'd buy one of those even if I could afford it, because of the urushi, I can admire them from a safe distance as exquisite pieces of art that are probably *also* superb writing instruments (whereas the pens on the list mostly appear to be neither). Heck, my plum 51 was under $72 US -- even with shipping -- and is both functional and classy. Which those mostly, well, aren't....

Continuing the not so user friendly, unattractive, ridiculous price, status symbol theme: I think they missed this one.

 

I guess Montegrappa really was counting on 12/21/12?

 

Forgot to add, the rollerball version of this pen is more expensive.

I wonder what would possess them to price the rollerball higher than the fountain pen? Either way, the price is $137,950.000 more than the price I'd be willing to pay for it.

No offense intended but not one of those pens is aesthetically pleasing to me in any way.

If your going to make a $1,000,000+ pen, at least make it look nice!

 

Djshift, a could bet that a local jeweler could manufacturer a pen very similar pen to the Diamante for a fraction of the price. No offence, but it looks like a piece of overpriced and semi-ugly bling, just like all of the pens on that list.

I suspect that these pens are not aimed at people who love writing, or even those who enjoy the finest craftsmanship, but rather those who simply want to have the biggest or most expensive of everything - because they can.

The Caran d'Ache doesn't look bad. It's not worth what they're charging, but it's not nearly as bad as the blue-and-gold thing.

 

I like complex patterns and interesting textures, so a lot of modern pens bore me. They're all the same, it seems like the Chinese pens are the only decently priced ones with interesting patterns (decent price <$40 for something constantly carried and drop-able).

Well, call me prejudiced, but from what I've seen there it seems to me that price tags don't guarantee elegance/aesthetics

 

Nicely stated...there isn't a single one on that list that I'd want, even if it was free, althought several of them had nice aspects.

 

For the record, I could never enjoy a writing instrument that cost enough money to feed, house and clothe a family of 4 for a year or more.

To me it seems that we see a collection of expensive shells around a high end 18 ct nib with propably a resin or ebonite feeder and a plastic piston. Some of them even have a cheap ( if you find 2000 $ cheap ) twin model for the poor.
