Howard - I am glad that this holder inspired you to try this set-up once again. I will be eagerly looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

E_o_C - I made a shallow grooves in the holder that the wing slots into at the two contact points. The grooves are then filled partially with a mix of wood glue and Holly dust (collected during the filing stage). The wing is placed in the grooves and held in place with rubber bands - excess glue+holly dust mixture is removed carefully with a toothpick and some cloth.

I applied a couple of layers of finish to both pieces which made the clean up easier. the parts to be glued together were covered with masking tape when applying finish.

These things take up a lot of time :-)

Hello, I have taken to making my own oblique holders from broken drumsticks and such. :)

My most recent one has a flange that can take different sizes of nibs.

Hi all

New to this forum and the world of oblique pens. Thought I would share two I just finished over the weekend. Actuallly the first two I have attempted. Not actually a caligrapher, I can look at at inanimate objects and find a purpose for them but a blank white page makes my brain go numb!

This is just amazing Dorothy.

Love the spirals. I know how difficult that is, have destroyed a tonne of holders trying to get the spirals done.

I am fine with it as long as I don't try to get it hollow, like yours :)

The trouble starts when I try the hollow carving

Great work

Here are a few I have made in preparation for the Scriptus Toronto pen show. Its only a week away, and I am getting very nervous. This will be my first actual pen show.

I have used Peruvian walnut, Black walnut and Oak. I just used a little friction polish for the finish, as I wanted to maintain the wood feel.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks so much AD356. I'm working on some more. So time consuming, but it's quite enjoyable! I do get frustrated with it at times, but overall I find the hobby more fascinating than frustrating.

There's a longing in my heart for one of your pen holders, but alas, every time I visit you etsy page there are already sold. There must be a longing in many peoples hearts for the same...why ever not? They're magnificent.

Thanks so much :) I am still trying to figure things out. Broke a couple of holders already using the wrong wood, or structure. It's quite time consuming, but addictive!

Here's another of my Double Helix holders. Can anyone share some tips on how to finish a holder with carvings? I have mainly tried wood lacquer, and also shoe polish (which I have read about on various woodworking websites). Thanks in advance!

Hi Dorothy - I use spray on lacquer. It gives me the best finish and it is waterproof so the wood does not get stained. Porous woods still let some ink get into the pores but it is still not as bad as it would have been with a wax finish. I prefer the look and feel of wax finishes but they wear off so need regular maintenance - and they are not nearly as waterproof.

Stellar. I am suffering from pen envy.

That is a beautiful design.

Have you tried, Wipe on Poly from Minwax. You just wipe it on with a rag, and wipe off.

That's something I haven't tried. Thanks, will keep in mind.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
