MusinkMan. ... "Here are a few new ones that I've managed to finish over the last few days."

I mustn't look, I mustn't look, I mustn't look.

Oh Man... I looked.

LOL Doug! Look back this evening...2 more coming up after I get the flanges installed. Very cool ones at that!

I'm interested in this as well, only I'm a hook-over lefty (even more extreme contortions!) Would love to find a custom tool to help us because I've always wanted to learn Spencerian but can't with current straight or oblique holders.

From the little bit of research I've been able to do. John DeCollibus uses a normal oblique holder

However he holds the paper "funny", in a style completely unique to him.

There is another way, though. You can simply create an "inverted" pen holder with the flange on the other side as here At bullet point number 7 illustrates. And This is how one might use said holder

I'm sure it would be quite elementary for Brian to make such a holder.

It's not the holder, it's the flange. (When I started out, I made a couple of left-handed flanges quite by accident.) Just put the arc on the opposite surface of the brass sheet. It's no more difficult than that.

The paper position isn't all that funny, other than using the right hand to move the paper. The same writing line orientation can be achieved for right-handed scribes by increasing the flange angle slightly or moving the paper about 8 inches to the right and an equal amount farther from the body, or some combination of the two.

Every freeman has an undoubted right to lay what sentiments he pleases before the public; to forbid this, is to destroy the freedom of the press; but if he publishes what is improper, mischievous or illegal, he must take the consequence of his own temerity. Awesome video, but I'm not an underwriter like the calligrapher is in the video. For me to use a straight holder, I'd have to turn the paper sideways, which is a bit too much for my brain to navigate! I can write (sort of) with a straight holder, but I can't flex because I push the nib instead of pul it. Oblique holders don't work at all for me. Here's my freak contortions for all to see:

This is how I normally hold a straight-shaft pen holder, with paper upright (i.e. untilted). I push the nib rather than pull it and can't flex this way.

Same position/pen, just shot from another angle:

This is what it looks like when I hold an oblique holder-- totally undoable!

Same position/pen, just shot at a different angle:

Here's what I'm thinking the nib position needs to be in relation to the shaft (perpendicular)-- pretend the second pen nib is where the flange would go:

Same thing, different angle shot:

Only have one. I got it at the Little Rock pen show last March. I was told it was vintage and it clearly has been somewhat used. It bears a resemblence to many of these modern ones showing up in this thread.

Wooo hooo...cool vintage holder. Seems to have had a bit of surgery done on it at some point...a little "grip and foot transplant", but the patient seems to be doing quite well. :-)

Excellent, Stompie! I'm glad they arrived, bro! Looks like you are already putting them to good use. Were you able to catch a whiff of the sandalwood? It smelled very fragrant when I turned it on the lathe...then by that evening it was "less aromatic"...then by the next day, it was only a faint aroma. If you take some light sandpaper and sand under the foot (on the bottom) lightly, I'll bet it will emit it's sweet smell for you.

I sanded under both my feet and my bottom - got some strange looks from folk standing around, but not much smell!

Should I try doing that again but this time before I shower?

That longer handle works brilliant - hardly even feel the holder in my hand as I work.

The Lilly is also great! I have put a 358 Esterbrook into it and it writes like a dream mate!

Seeing all these beautiful pen holders made me take the plunge on my first Magnusson-style one.

I have a question though. How do all of you store your holders with long, thin tails? Mine'll be too long to fit in any case I have, and I'm worried that delicate-looking tail will get snapped if I leave it unprotected, or even wrapped in cloth.

I store my longer holders, (including an actual Magnusson) in lengths of two inch diameter PVC pipe with end caps. I put foam pipe insulation on the inside for padding.

hahaha...nobody but us loonies would come up with such a concept as "scratch 'n sniff" as it relates to calligraphy dip pens. hahahaha

Man, sometimes I think us calligraphy-types need some serious help! hahahaa

Victor, I also will ship it to you in PVC pipe. That stuff is bulletproof...but those long handles are a lot more resilient than you would imagine. Think of long artist brushes...those long slender handles...they certainly can be broken, but they don't have to be handled with kid gloves. BTW, your woods have not yet arrived...hoping for tomorrow! :-)

I'll be in touch! --Brian--

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
