Private Reserve Ebony Purple

Purple is one of my favourite colours to write with, and so I'm always on the hunt for deep, rich, dark purples. I adore De Atramentis Aubergine, and Sailor Shigure is my top fav dark purple, but I decided to branch out and try PR Ebony Purple after hearing so many rave reviews about it on FPN.

This ink is very dark, almost black, becoming a rich purple where is shades into lighter areas ...

... and it's got delicious sheen.

The only downside is its long dry time.

Still, I don't let that stop me from enjoying this ink! :) I also tried mixing it with Sailor Kobe #4 and got a gorgeous wine colour that dries in just over 10 seconds, so the dry time can be brought into check when you mix it with other inks.

Overall, how do I feel about this ink?

Many MANY more photos of this ink in my review album here.

I just put some in my Lamy Al-Star with the 1.1 nib and I love it. Very dark, but the purple is definitely there.

I adore this ink - I think I have at least 3 pens inked with it right this minute. It does take a bit longer to dry, especially on very smooth paper - but I've learned to adjust. I didn't realize it had such a lovely sheen though, thanks! I'll be looking askance at my pages from now on, trying to find it!

I got a sample of this ink and absolutely loved the color. But, it had such generous flow it was basically unusable in all but my Japanese XFs where it came out straight black. I might have to try diluting it a bit, because its just about the perfect shade of purple.

I picked this up along with Ebony Green and absolutely love them! You're spot-on about the long dry times... especially on Rhodia paper. I don't tend to mind this except when I'm using the annotated lined-paper format for school notes and tend to jump all over the page.

@K. Cakes - let us know how that works for you? It does appear black when used in my Pilot Metropolitan and Sailor Pro Gear and would love a way to make it appear to be more on the purple side of the spectrum!

Good review! I too love the heck out of this stuff. (Very dark) purple is definitely my favourite ink colour (I think) and this is also my favourite PR Ebony. Funny that you say you are tickled pink about De A's Aubergine. I like and use it even more!!

looks very neat and understated

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time
