Custom Camlin Trinity

Camlin trinity wrapped with some seed pods to give it a 'horn' effect. The pods are extremely brittle so wrapping them was very difficult. Had to cover the cap without removing the clip, which was again a royal pain. Will try and post some better pictures later. This is my first attempt at wrapping a pen. :-)

I've no idea about the technique, but it looks interesting. Looking forward to the other pictures.

Its not a big deal. Just wrapping seed pods around the barrel and cap. But those pods are very brittle and unlike wood, very difficult to bend. Then I coated it with lacquer to protect it from the elements. :-)

So, I'll ask. What seeds are those, and what do the unwrapped seed pods look like?

Did you wrap the Hero too? (or is that the Hero you were drawing with first?)

Interesting take on pen customization! How did you manage to get the lacquer underneath the clip without affecting the clip's functionality?

though i like the trinity as it is, i cant stop appreciating ur wrk..

I too have the following doubts which are raised above

1) what kind of seedpods are u referring to? how does the look uncoated.

2) how do u actually coat it.. Do u mix with resin and coat it quickly or do you dip in seed pods and paint the resin over it ?

3) seriously how did you manage to squeeze resin below the clip ? I assume that the clip portion is not coated.. is it so ?

Hello all,

The leaf pods belong to Acacia leucocephala Roxb. It is a tree found commonly in parks here. When they split open and disseminate the seeds, the pods fall to the ground and are dried by the sun. Usually these pods contort and twist when dry so it is very difficult to bend them to your requirements, and the pods are also brittle so they break quite easily.

As for lacquering the cap, the lacquer was applied in parts using a fine brush while holding the clip using a wooden block as a spacer. Once the first part was dry, the block was moved to that part and the lacquer was applied to the next part. The resin was also applied in the same way and the pod was curved and stuck over it.

I like it, especially the idea of using a raw material that is all around you. Very common material, but a very unique pen.

Thank you Chris, I really appreciate your comments. Unique is exactly what I was aiming for. Even though the pods are commonly found, they are very difficult to identify in this form. I do not have a lathe and cannot find a fountain pen turning kit here, and cannot afford a custom-made pen. So the next best thing is to take what I have and try to elevate it. I like the Trinity's form but I just have too many black pens, so I wanted something that was unique. :-)

The Hero is painted to look like woodgrain. I wanted a wooden pen so I tried to simulate it as much as I could using paint, but the variegated wood pattern was too hard to achieve. So I went for the wrap on the Trinity. :-)

How about a photo of what the seed pods look like before you begin working on them? And a pic of where they are found?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
