Your Top 5 Pens?

Michael Francis

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty curious to hear and would like to get an idea of what everybody's top 5 list consists of. Being that I'm a newbie and only have three pens, I'd like to know everyone's top 5. If this or something similar has been covered before then I apologize. So, what are your top 5 pens?

I don't have five pens I could identify as being "The Top Five" rather I have quite a few pens that would be considered as being in the top tier. Out of my fairly small collection I'd say that about 80% of my pens would fall in that classification and the other 20% would be really close.

These are the top 5 that I own:

1. Bexley Poseidon Magnum, black with gold-plated trim, 18K Bexley F nib (Binderized)

2. Gate City Belmont, gray, 18K Cartier nib.

3. Sailor 1911 Large, black with rhodium-plated trim, 21K Sailor H-B nib (nib tipping rounded and smoothed)

4. Parker Premier, black with gold-plated trim, 18K medium nib (Binderized)

5. Sheaffer "fat" Touchdown desk pen, medium 14k nib

If wanting a 5th that is not a desk pen, substitute

5. Sheaffer Snorkel Valiant, pastel blue, Fine.

I guess I'm still planning on getting a 1949 fat Touchdown that is not a desk pen at some point, and it should take a position in the top 5, but it may have to wait until I attend my first pen show. I'd rather restore it myself than pay for a restored one, but I might change my mind the next time one shows up in Richard Binder's monthly tray. The last one I passed on in part because I had just come off a buying spree.

I know my id is "mhosea", but you can call me Mike. It's an old Unix thing.

1. MB 234 1/2 Deluxe ('52-55 only) 14 C KOB (Kugle Oblique Broad) with Meisterstuck clip, a different cap ring than the regular 234 1/2. It is a standard sized pen; the girth is slightly wider than 'normal',and due to the brass piston parts has back weighting.

One of my "three" perfectly balanced pens, each are different. Geha 725 and P-75 are the other two.

#2 a 400NN Pelikan flexi 14 C OF. Medium Large, holds more ink 1.97ml than a Over Sized MB 149..1.60ml, yet is a regular girth width. (there are enough pictures of it floating around)

Both my #1 & 2 pen were bought in the same lot in a live auction. I did not want that 'ugly' MB...being real noobie didn't know about the 139 and other pre'war pens that this resembles. All I wanted that 400NN made in 1956 for was it's nib to put on my '90-96 M400 tortoise. It is a rare friction feed. :roflmho:

Sort of odd both ended up my best pens.

#3 Geha 725 Goldschwing/ Gold Wing 14 K semi-flex, rolled gold trim including a gold disk as cap and barrle jewel, thin sleek medium large, classic. Made by Geha to catch MB and did. Picture with permission of Penboard.de.

This was always over budget, until I found it for 'half price' €50 in England during the World cup when no one was there or they had lost all their money betting on England. A week later two went for half of that. :crybaby:

#4.one of my 5-6 Osmia pens. This inherited pen started my addiction.

@'52 Osmia-Faber-Castell (took over Osmia in 1951.) Mdl 540 black, gray and pearl.

This has a Supra steel M nib which is 'flexi" I have 5 other Osmia's with gold or steel Supra nibs and I can not say one is better than the other.http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm300/BoBoOlson/faber_osmia_62_f_marbled_3.jpg

5. This is the Super Constellation early '40's - mid '50's plane....as the first AWAC's, the EC-121. I happened to work on it. The prettier version was the first Air Force 1. The reason why it has three tails is the Howard Hughes airplane was too big for any hanger in the world with a regular tail, so to get that rudder and stability, they had to make three tails to get it into the hangers...which were only big enough for the DC-3/C-47 another plane I worked on. A very stable plane, perhaps the most stable ever made.

Some one in the Mid fifties made a couple 'no name' nice piston pens, with little three tailed 'Connies' on the 14 K nib. The nib is semi-flex and both are good writers. They are not Wearevers that was the box in the Ebay picture that the pens came in...If I buy the pen, I get the picture for free. Bo Bo's Rules.

One of the prettiest planes that flew...if one can think the upper and lower radomes away.

And my Pelikan 120 school pen regular flex F 'a joy to write with', is almost always in rotation. A pen need not be expensive nor pretty to be a good writing pen.

I've owned more than 50 pens, but these stand out:

1) 1950s Japanese Urushi - irreplaceable, an artistic subtle honesty missing in my $$$$ modern Urushi pen. Can't put it down.

2) A modern Parker Duofold, tweaked nib - a silky nib that brings a smile; I forgive design flaws which I fixed. Always inked.

3) Eversharp Skyline - An extra-fine nib smoother than the most touted modern pens. Makes it look easy.

4) 1950s Aurora 88, hooded nib - hard to explain: pared down Italian minimalist design, an extension of my hand, and feedback like a Ducati motorcycle I once owned.

5) Lots of great pens, but none make the short list.

Pelikan 100; Parker Duofold; Sheaffer Balance; Eversharp Skyline; Aurora 88 Piston; Aurora 88 hooded; Kaweco Sport; Sailor Pro Gear

Great looking lists, everyone! Nice to see the variety of pens liked around here. Gives me an idea of some of the pens I should get for future purchases.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
