Journals For Use In Back Pants Pocket?

Vitus Apollo

Recommended Posts

I'm shopping for a journal I can keep in my back pocket comfortably and use for recording ideas for a storyline I'm working on.

Any one have any idea's on anything that could fit the bill? I'm not looking for peoples opinion on best journals ever; I'm simply in search of a durable journal that can withstand every day back pocket use without feeling like I'm sitting on a brick, as do most hard covers!

Thanks in advance

Measure your pocket then check out Rhodia and Clairefontaine on Ebay. Here's a couple of links.

Clairefontaine

Rhodia

I prefer the Clairefontine because it seems more stable over a period of time (but that is just my opinion).

How about the Midori Travellers notebook, passport size? Fits perfectly in back pocket, and very customizable!

I always have trouble with this question.

I just can't picture carrying a small note book, much less a writing instrument (other than a Fisher Bullet Pen) in a pants pocket. It just seems so wrong.

YMMV

+1. I carry mine in my back pocket and it's easy to forget it's there...

I tried the (thin) side-staplebound Rhodia pads in back pocket, but they just don't work for me. They get all tore up. In a front pocket, they work a bit better. For a roughly 3"x5" format, I've found nothing better than the Clarefontaine Life.Unplugged Duo (affectionately known as "Black & Tans"). I can't recommend them highly enough!!

Clairefontaine Duos @ Goulet Pens

They stand up to my backside (which at its highest was over 250#) just fine. Jeans, khakis, dress slacks, cargo shorts, pajama pants...you name it. The cover is flexible unlike a Moleskine/Webbie, but it's thicker and more durable than a Cahier cover. They're staplebound, excellent Clairefontaine paper, and have lasted upwards of a year in my back pocket (usually I fill them much more quickly...but that was a slow year). Plus they're relatively inexpensive. I do not go ANYWHERE without mine (and a Lamy Pico)...you never know when inspiration will strike.

I carry a Moleskine Volant XS in my back pocket and a Kaweco Sport in my front pocket all the time. I love those two little things ;)

I work in greenhouses. I get soaked nearly daily, and anything I carry is subject to that wetness. I carry a Rite in the Rain All-weather outdoor journal No 1735. The paper is definitely not fountain pen friendly, so it must be a ball point or pencil. It's not my intention here to start a discussion on what instrument to carry, we all love fp's right? I'm jut saying that this notepad with a plastic cover is likely the best at taking abuse. If you want a pad for very wet conditions, then fountain pen friendliness is the least of your concerns anyway. Oh yeah, it's comfortable too.

I hope you can find something that works for you.

I've tried many and the only one that seems to hold up for me is:

Classic Clairefontaine Staplebound Notebook - 3.5 x 5.5, Lined Paper

I get them from Goulet's at $2.25 each.

Takes me about 6 months to fill one up. Cover holds up very well even with the constant spine bending due to the overly roundness of my posterior, but that's a whole nuther post in itself. :)

Can't beat the price and the paper is quite FP friendly.

My favourite isn't a journal per se but the Rhodia top staple bound notepads in the No11 or No12 sizes inside one of the Rhodia pad holders. They are flexible and have small pockets that can accommodate a few extra bills or a metro card if you like.

I'm carrying a Claireftontaine Tan at the moment, but I will be moving to a a Field Notes sometime within the next 60 days. However, I do most of my on the go writing onto a simple index card hipster using a pencil. 3 X 5 cards are so versatile. I wish I could use a fountain pen every day for all of my writing, but reality kicks in and I use a wooden pencil much of the time. Yes, I am a school teacher who teaches a couple of shop classes, so I always have a stub of a pencil somewhere about my person.

Pocket sized Moleskine goes with me everywhere. Usually carry it in the back pocket of my jeans when it's not in my jacket pocket. Even when bent from sitting on it for hours, it holds up to a lot of abuse without falling apart even after months and months of use.

Here is my "Butt Brain," a well loved back pocket journal. Regular dime store small spiral pocket notebooks fit the cover I made from leather, as does the smallest size Apica notebook I got from Goulet. The leather protects the pages and is handy for holding business cards...cover of the notebooks slip inside the "pockets.post-82920-0-57488200-1366086091.jpg"

I've been carrying one of the Clairefontaines that've been mentioned several times in this thread already-- it's so useful, I didn't even know I needed it until I started using it, and now I use it every day. It's durable, the paper is high-quality, and it's the perfect size.
