The moment of sunset is so fleeting, I worked off a photo for the sketch. However, I've lived in the southwest for close to 30 years and seen this sunset in real life many times.

Another interesting book I picked up at the library, Drawing on the right side of the brain, http://www.amazon.com/Drawing-Right-Side-Brain-Definitive/dp/1585429201/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1397540858&sr=1-1&keywords=drawing+right+side+brain

Very surprising, and amazing how well the techniques work!

I used to walk by Dr.Edwards' office every day at school. As my other art instructor's would note, the exercises were ones that art instructors had been using for years, she just gave a coherent explanation of why they worked. But I do recommend the book.

I've been off track with the Lohan study for the last few months. Finally! I sat down today and finished demo 10.

So I've completed the three part series in his book depicting the same barn in three different seasons.

For reference, here is the work I did on demo 8 and 9 showing the same barn in Fall and Winter.

It felt good to be back. Hopefully I'll find more time and keep on track with the lessons.

I finished another Lohan demo tonight. For the first time I've skipped out of order and jumped to demo 14. I just felt like moving past the last few building sketches and moved to the first animal sketch.

So, here is the Raccoon from demo #14:

Andrew, you do lovely work. I am envious of your ability with detail and consistancy. But I do love the Sonoran Sunset! Keep posting!

Thanks everybody. I've been on a tear lately. I *finally* got a few new art supplies:

9'x12' Bristol paper (Strathmore 200 Series pad)

#4, #8, and #12 round Princeton art brushes

Noodlers Black ink

Noodlers Konrad flex pen

I cut my own watercolor backing board out of some gatorboard we had leftover from a kids school project, taped the bristol paper down on it to minimize warping, and did my very first ink wash:

I obviously have room for improvement, but the studies I've done so far have helped lead me to this.

My drawing streak continues. I've finished Demo #15 from the Lohan book. The Mountain Lion.

I think my drawing came out darker than Lohan wanted in the lesson. He was specifically pushing for how to render uniform light colored fur. The lines I used for the fur were heavier and I think it conveys a darker look. In retrospect, I think I could pull off the kind of very light and uniform hatching lines he wanted in the lesson, but it would have required me to slow way down. I hatched this kinda quickly.

Even though it probably didn't meet the lessons requirements, I think that it came out beautiful in it's own right.

Not sure why Flickr decided to break my image thumbnail on here. Here is my ink wash image again.

I like them both. The wash is very interesting...with a smoky graphite look...what is gatorboard and what are its properties? And the cougar's expression is great!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Gatorboard is kinda like foam board. They both have two layers surrounding a foam center. The surface on traditional foam board is usually more like paper, but the surface on the gatorboard is more like a plastic. The plastic properties of the gatorboard meant some water resistance, so I chose it as the backing to tape my bristol paper on for the washing. It worked fine.

I looked at a few watercolor backing boards at my art store. They were made from coroplast (corrugated plastic). They wanted an obscene amount of money for something I figured I could cut out for myself. Coroplast is cheap to buy and easy to cut too. We sometimes have extra coroplast around because we use it in constructing the bottom of our son's guinea pig cage. (Believe me, that's a place you want total water resistance).

Glad you like the work. I'm just trying to figure out how this whole wash thing works.

Nicely done! I already had a masonite board with a clip but if I need something smaller, I'll look into this. Thanks.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
