I need it to write smooth with Diamine's Registrar ink on a roma lussa journal.

Which would work best? And Will either be an adequate experience, say, better than a ballpoint?

Hands down a medium. Well tuned steel nib would be much better than a ballpoint.

Just have to jump in here and ask....why a medium? It seems so subjective....what size ball points do you use currently? How large is your handwriting?

For me, a medium Safari nib is just toooo big. EF would have been my answer.

I dont see much differance in M and F in lamy, if you have small hand writing I would choose EF. They're all good though!

I'm going to go with Lionofdi here and say "neither," but I'm going to disagree with the specifics anyway - try a 1.1 italic. Absolute magic, by wizards. Pen wizards.

I have an XF, F and an M and admittedly don't see much difference in the way of writing experience. There also isn't a tremendous difference in size for me, but then again, I think they're all too broad these days.

I guess it depends on your writing style...I have pretty tiny writing so I prefer XF or F, with the F nib being noticeably smoother than the XF nib with only a minimal increase in line width.

You could also get both nibs :P Stub nibs are pretty neat too if you have larger handwriting

The medium writes like a firehose. Okay, it's not THAT bad, but the line is toooo broad for scribbling math equations and notes in the margins of a lined notebook. I'd go with an F or XF if you write in tiny font. Go M or larger if you're not trying to conserve space on your paper.

Finer nibs work better on commonly found papers. Medium and broad nibs put more ink on the paper. Result : bleed through.

But, why don't you try those nibs yourself? Most stores sell Lamy pens

What you could do is buy the pen with one or the other and then buy the other nib.

I have an Al Star, originally had a fine. I bought a 1.1 mm and haven't re-installed the fine. I like having different choices. Right now I have the following inked:

Waterman Phileas F - Pelikan 4001 Blue Black

Waterman Phileas M- Monteverde Brown

True Writer Silver Anniversary F - Diamine Blue Black

Lamy Al Star 1.1 -Diamine Sherwood Green

I was very nervous about trying the much larger 1.1 mm nib over the fine which I had been writing with for so long. The fact that the nibs are easily interchangeable is very nice. (same nibs on Al Star/Safari/Vista for sure and perhaps other Lamy offerings)

I figured at worst I am out only $13 if I don't like the nib....

My Lamy Safari F nib writes like a Medium-Broad. It's very wet and lays down a pretty huge line compared to other F nibs. I was thinking about getting an XF nib to try, but based on many written reviews here it looks like the XF, F, and M don't really differ all that much.

I have to say, I notice a difference 'tween M, F & XF. As someone else posted, I like to use my pens for making small notes in the margins of various books, plus my writing is small, anyway: I choose extra-fine when I can.

I do have one issue with one of my 3 Lamys. Its the color-of-the-year pink version, and it has the F nib. I use only red ink in it, and it seems to always be the one pen that is hard to get inkflow started if I let it set a week. Once its going, its fine, tho. Outside of the that, the other 2 pens, with XF nibs, start and write flawlessly. I use Waterman Black and a Lamy Blue in each of those.

All 3 of my Lamy pens are of the safari/al star ilk.

I have a Safari with an M nib and find it really smooth, but the line width is a bit too think for small writing. From the writing samples given above, it looks like there is a quite a difference between M and F, but not much noticeable different between F and XF. Although I have heard that F is smooth compared to the XF. I'm currently on the lookout for a new F nib, I think it should be perfect.

I've just ordered an F and an EF nib for my recently-bought Safari, I find the M nib is just a bit too wide for me, especially when used at work.

Hoping they'll arrive tomorrow so I can try them both out though it sounds like the F and EF are pretty similar, especially after looking at Flake's picture. Will let you know how I get on :)
