Here is an article about T.S. Eliot's fountain pen being donated to the Royal Society of Literature:

Just wondering if anyone has info on what kind of pen it is?

very interesting. too bad they didn't identify the pen (all we know is that it had a gold band wide enough for his initials to be put on). i'd hazard a guess and say that it was likely a conway stewart? we do see that he used "blue-gray" ink--may have been blue at the beginning, graying out in time?

 

even more interesting, i recall (from my grad-school reading) that eliot preferred a typewriter for his poetry, on the presumption that the typescript lent more detachment to his work. you can see this (iirc) at the british library, the MS of the wasteland" with his friend and editor ezra pound's famous suggestion to begin where it now begins ("april is the cruellest month...").

If "believed to have been given to the poet as a schoolboy by his mother" is accurate, that would date it to the very early 1900s and the USA. If so, I hope they know how to look after it.

Yeah, not a good way to be handling a vintage pen with that sort of provenance.... (Says the person who lost a M405 Stresemann out of a pouch while camping... :blush:; fortunately it was found and turned into lost & found and I got it back, but after having lost both the original M200 Café Crème and its replacement, I was definitely having heart palpitations that the M405 would get run over by a fully loaded SUV hauling a fully loaded trailer of tent pieces...).

That sounds terrible, but at least it was found and you got it back safe and sound!

Well, the plus side (besides getting the pen back safe and sound) is that I got to meet a couple of other "pen people", including one woman that was in the lost and found tent.

But that pen doesn't get to go camping any more, after that.... The same way the Morrison ringtop with the gold-filled filigree overlay and the lovely juicy nib doesn't go outside anymore -- it has too much of a tendency to unscrew itself from the cap when it's on the lanyard.... :(

Hmmm. I should pull both those pens back out, since "sheltering in place" has become the new norm....

I have a signed first edition of Ash Wednesday, but the signature is in pencil.

Lined paper makes a prison of the page.

That's hilarious.

when I saw it, I think the only word that properly describes how I felt is "incredulous" I could NOT believe anyone would do anything that careless with pretty much any fountain pen, let alone one that valuable/rare/important! It completely blew my mind, still does.

I admit, I shuddered! I find myself checking my shirt placket several times a day to make sure my pens haven’t come unclipped.....can’t imagine just stuffing it in a pocket!

you are correct! i had not noticed that in the first tweet, the handshake picture does NOT have the pen in the pocket!

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
