Sailor 21 Pocket Fountain Pen

Hi, I've had this sailor pocket fountain pen for a few months now and it has sat uninked in a drawer. I finally got some Sailor ink cartridges and decided to bring it into my rotation of pens. I am quite partial to Japanese pocket pens having previously carried a MYU and quite recently a Platinum pocket pen. The Sailor 21 is a well made pen with a resin cap, body and section. There are some very nice gold bands that give the pen a classy look and the pen has a nice spring loaded clip. The main story here is the nib, a wonderful and smooth 21k nib that lays down a fairly wet line. The pen is lightest pocket pen I own and is very comfortable in use. I haven't gotten a converter for the pen yet but I'll report my experiences when I get one.

And for a size comparison next to two of my most used pens a Plantinum pocket fountain pen and a Pelkian M205.

What a lovely pen. Thanks for posting this and showing some photos. Really like the Sailor 21. I've a Sailor Sapporo Mini - awesome little pen it is.

I have one of these that I bought in Japan in the mid-'70s. It has sat unused for over 30 years until just recently, when I have tried using it as an eyedropper. Where were you able to obtain cartridges for it? And were you ever able to get a converter, and if so, from where?

Until you ink a pen, it is merely a pretty stick. --UK Mike

The Sailor (and Platinum) converters for short pens are harder to find than hen's teeth. As best I know they were sold for ony a fleeting period in the early 1970s. the idea was that makers desired users to use cartridges and buy their ink.

i have one converter each for Sailor and Platinum. Don't use them but they are worth their weight in gold. I have not seen any more.

The only way to acquire one is to constantly be searching Yahoo Japan or have some serious Japanese connections.

Mine came in lots of pens purchased from Japanese vendors.

I know this is incredibly late but I thought I would add this for future reference... I have had luck using the Monteverde International Mini Converters with the end lopped off. So far so good!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
