Pelikan Wannabe Piston Filler

Recommended Posts

This is another first try for me. I've always admired the Pelikan style since I first got into FP's a couple years ago. The 100 and 101 style was my inspiration for this creation of mine. All the materials were made by myself out of alumilite. The ink system is a true internal piston filler which is activated by twisting the bottom finial. The material on the body is a sleeve that's 1mm thick and can be removed and swapped out with another colored piece. It's adorned with a #6 Bock nib. I'm extremely happy with how it came out. It's well balanced and writes beautifully! I hope you all enjoy it. Thanks for looking!

Wonderful job.

May I ask how did you set the rings in the cap? How comes they are visible on the inside of the cap too?

Superb work - it's good to see the patterned end cap matching the barrel, rather than just a totally plain cap.

Happiness isn't getting what you want, it's wanting what you've got.

Very nice indeed, but because it's a copy of a Pelikan,I will report this to the PEN POLICE. :roflmho: :roflmho: :roflmho: :roflmho: :roflmho: :roflmho:

I'm curious about that too.

So the barrel has a removable binde? How about making the section, cap and finales (both barrel and cap) in a single colour, with interchangeable barrel bindes in various colours and patterns?

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

The rings in the cap were done by first turning and drilling the rings to size and stacking them on a solid piece of the red material. Then gluing that into the cap and redrilling and tapping for the threads. They're very sturdy and have held up to abuse by me since making it. This is my first in this style so I'm giving it a rough test run before making more.

Yes the body has a removable binde. So I could turn several more to go in place of the current one, although I'd need to make another cap finial to match. That wouldn't be difficult though.

as others have said, very nice looking. great color combination for the type of pen you're modeling it after.

and like Shawn, I'd be interested to know more about the piston.

In my original concept my plan was to make my own piston. However, since I was making this for a contest and ran short on time I opted for a ready made one offered on Richard Greenwald's site.

Looks great! I'm also a fan of the Pelikan 100 look - 100N is probably my favorite. I really need to find one at a good price. I've about got one done with the same piston, but I need a different drill. Either 3/8" isn't right, or mine is smaller than 3/8".

I did make a prototype pen with a self-made piston before starting this one, but it only sorta works. I didn't have the right materials for the plunger, but I'm not sure it's quite right anyway. At some point I'll make a proper plunger and see how it goes. I'll post it later so you can laugh at me :roflmho:

On the piston there's a small nail going through the white part. You might need to file that flush for a better fit. I've got my notes on how I made it down in the shop. If I used something other than a 3/8" bit I'll let you know. I remember mine went in pretty easily, did use the pen press for the last 1/8" in. I attached a pic of the model I was going after, just changed a couple things.

On my homemade piston I used ebonite with some O-rings on the end to seal the chamber. Still haven't finished it, but it's on my list...so one day it'll happen.

Good point on the nail - I can't even get mine in that far. I'll have to punch it out and sand some more. I don't like relying on sanding though. I think I'll finish my other pen first. It looks exactly the same, but is a button filler with a window. I didn't know if I could get it to fill up a window, but it works .

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
