Black Inks With Sheen?

Interesting, that almost looks like fine metallic glitter-type particles. Looking at Manuscript black cartridge ink description though, there's nothing about inclusion of shimmer particles.

It is a funny one.

The sheen just looks silver now that it's under bright, artificial light, so I wonder if this is simply something that happens with silver sheen in general, when a beam of sunlight hits it. It behaves very much like sheen rather than shimmer and has only shown up on TR so far.

From the bits of digging I've done, it looks like these carts in the bargain pen sets are different to their normal carts or bottled ink. I wonder who makes them.

In the About Us section they mostly talk about their pens, and not about inks specifically, but they do say "Plus, our product is proudly Made in Britain."

“I admit it, I'm surprised that fountain pens are a hobby. ... it's a bit like stumbling into a fork convention - when you've used a fork all your life.”

Aha! Thank you those links were really helpful. (My wallet thanks you not after looking through the brochure :D ).

It looks like they do two grades of cartridges, a value type that you can buy in bulk and their usual ones that come in smaller packs. There's also the creative calligraphy ones but they don't come in black.

The ones with the sheen have a white bottom, which I thiiink means it's their standard rather than the cheap ones. Might have to grab a bottle of their black fp ink and find out.

And as for the sheen, Private Reserve's Velvet Black wins no-contest! Its actually a very dark saturated black but the heavy golden sheen (even in a Pilot XF) makes the ink come off a bit lighter than it actually is. Aurora has a sheen as well, but it only seems noticeable if you're looking for it.

Ive been on the search for a black ink with a sheen for the longest time, and have wasted tons of money on getting inks which are said to exhibit sheen but are actually regular black inks. It was very dissatisfying and I gave up the search.

The PR Velvet Black you mentioned, seems promising, but I have doubts about how well PR inks perform in other areas, eg, flow, staining, nib creep etc making them high maintenance.

I used PR Electric DC Blue which had an insane sheen but was high maintenance.

Have you managed to see any black inks with a red sheen? Thats what Im REALLY after.

Iroshizuku Take Sumi has red sheen, but you do need some non-absorbent/coated paper and a wet line.

You could try leaving some decanted amount uncapped for a while to let some water evaporate and concentrate the ink a bit for easier sheening.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
