My Stipula Baracca

penmanila

Recommended Posts

this isn't a review yet because the pen is still winging its way to me, but i'm just happy to report that i've found and bought another grail pen (so soon, after my duofold greenwich centennial, CS churchill, and CS marlborough)--a stipula baracca, which had been burning a hole in my head since i saw a picture of it in an advertisement in penworld many years ago. you'll find more about the pen here in another FPN thread.

i'm told that these pens have been rather difficult to find and that i'd be lucky to get them under $400--so snagging a near-mint one on ebay for $260 can't have been all bad ;)

will let you know how the pen performs when i get it. meanwhile, some pics from the ad:

note the griffin and that familiar-looking equine rampant ;)

the pen is ebonite, with silver furnishings and an 18K F nib.

Congratulations, I know I would be thrilled. Enjoy the pen. I look forward to your review. At some point I want to get my hands on at least one Etruria.

Major congrats on a great stunner

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Another beautiful Stipula, when Stipula does it right, nobody does it better. I am speaking of the Bellini here. I know others may not agree.

thanks, tom! it's still with my sister in virginia (am half the world away, in manila) so it'll be another month or so before i actually get to play with it... a very long month! i did see it on video, though, and am glad to note that it seems to be quite large--larger than a duofold senior. once i shine up the silver furniture, it should look great in the pocket--and am looking forward to a very smooth writing experience.

...a Rebecca Moss LE. My daughter calls it my chick pen. :roflmho:

I'll say. Aside from that fact that Rebecca Moss isn't a WWI flying ace, yours has doesn't have a prancing horse (Baracca's emblem). Baracca's mother gave it to some guy who liked to build and race to put on his cars, although he did with at least one noticeable difference. Not sure what became of the driver/builder; all I know is that his name was Enzo Ferrari, he owned a MB 149 and used purple ink.

You would think then that the color of his cars should have been purple instead..............:roflmho:

Nah, there's a story that explains the preference for purple ink, which makes sense to me.

I have a very similar pen to the Bellini, red ebonite, rose gold nib and clip, piston filler - but it's not a Bellini - No idea what it is (seem to think it starts with an 'F')

If it had clown on it, perhaps it was the Fellini. :roflmho:

Checked my records and it's a Novocento Puccini - close, but no cigar! embarrassed_smile.gif

  • 1 month later...

here's my gorgeous baracca:

and its unusual sleeve filler:

question: how do you remove the sleeve filler and replace it with a converter? my pen came with neither converter nor instructions. does it use a standard converter? thanks!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
