A4 Spiral Pads

At work I use an A4 spiral notebook for capturing notes and wondered what notepads pass the 'fountain pen friendly' test. In the last few years I've ben using a Whitelines grid notebook but are there other worth considering too?

Ideally I would like a spiral bound dot pad but, until that comes along, happy to try anything else that's recommended assuming I can get it in the UK. The whitelines paper is okay and low key but does bleed through a little.

There are only a couple of actual shops left in town where you can get decent paper. One is in Stockbridge, the other in Morningside and both stock Clairefontaine notebooks and pads. The large bookshop near the University also has a small selection of Rhodia (which use Clairefontaine paper).

If you're looking for a more traditional notebook, you might want to try Owl and Lion in the West Port.

No affiliation with any of the above.

Owl and Lion looks fantastic and I had no idea it was there. I am going to head over there for a look very soon!

Thanks.

Cutting straight to the answer here is the A4 I use everyday - I love them.

The same line in Clairefontaine Essentials has a plain cover.

Thanks for that recommendation. Available in the UK too which is ideal.

I'm getting all distracted by all this lovely paper.

I love Black n Red notebooks. They don't come in dotted, but they're cheap an definitely fp friendly.

hi

I have been looking for the same and discovered that Pukka Pads produce A4 and A5 spiral bound pads of laid vellum writing paper. They are fine lined and fine perforated for sheet removal. They come in at about £10 for 3 x A5 pads (postage paid) so not too expensive. Haven't tried them yet but I am going to order some today. I've been using their normal Jotta pads for years and wouldn't use anything else for general note taking.

You can get 5 A4 ring bound Rhodia pads for £22 from Bureau Direct.

Here is the link

Works out at £4.40 each. Probably not THAT much more than you would buy other pads for, and you are getting pretty much the best A4 paper you can buy.

I have used brown covered A4 books from Paperchase which was £3.50, but bled through a bit. Decent enough for my purpose, but not the best for notes that you want to keep.

Notebooks from Oxford using Optik paper are excellent for fountain pens, smooth paper with no feathering or print through. Not sure whether they do dotted though.

Favourite pens in my collection (in alpha order): Caran d'Ache Ecridor Chevron F and Leman Black/Silver F; Parker 51 Aerometric M and F; Parker 61 Insignia M, Parker Duofold Senior F; Platinum #3776 Century M; Sailor 1911 Black/Gold 21 Kt M; Sheaffer Crest Palladium M/F; Sheaffer Prelude Silver/Palladium Snakeskin Pattern F; Waterman Carene Deluxe Silver F

Ryman has got a buy 1 get 2nd half price offer on Rhodia pads and notebooks at the moment. Pretty sure they had a4 spiral bound pads in the selection that I saw today.

If Rhodia isn't your thing, try Maruman Mnemosyne. There's a B5 spiral notebook called the Special Memo that's close to A4 size, with excellent, off-white paper and softer ruling.

If any one is interested, I was in my nearest Staples (Wimbledon) earlier today and found they are doing a buy 1 get 1 free on Black & Red A5 spiral and A4 spiral bound books. Hope this is of help to someone.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
