Buffalo Horn

All done with the Buffalo Horn pen.

I'm very happy with it.

Yes I know - the section... It was at hand so I grabbed it. I'll make a black one for it if you want. :)

It looks good Shawn. As for the section. While a back one might suit most people I think an Alternate Ivory or Casein would look neat. Perhaps not the most practical but.........smile.gif

Very cool, Shawn.

A word of caution about horn: in extreme changes of climate, it might split. I had that happen with one I sent from our dry wintery weather to a very humid Singapore. Haven't had the guts to do another since (wanna buy a bunch of horn? Got lots)

Keep up the experimentation!

Shawn, which material is that section made out of? If you could get some tortoiseshell-look acryllic or celluloid that would make the pen about as close to my dream pen as I'm going to get.... I would love a Hakase Buffalo Horn and Tortoiseshell but since Hakase uses real shell, the CITES agreement between Japan and the US makes getting one impossible for me... this would be an awesome alternative.

This section is made from amber tortoise lucite - but I have a couple small pieces of tortoise celluloid - enough for making a section.

Like this stuff...

And I have an alternate tort resin...

And then of course more of this amber tort...

Hmmm... tempting, I'm going to have to save up, didn't you have a resin blank from Invisible Man that looked something like that tort celluloid?

Aughhh... you post your beautiful work and it gets me to brainstorming.

Why do I have to have bills, I'd have so many more things that I want if it wasn't for those pesky things! :roflmho:

Bloody hell Shawn - that was quick!

And an absolutely gorgeous pen to boot. For the record, I love the section.

How did you find working with the horn?

Too many pens; too little writing.

Got to see this one in person Saturday at pen club meeting and it is nicer than the pics show! So smooth and clean looking. Love it!

Thanks!

How was it to work with? Reminded me a bit of some celluloid or softer ebonite. Was great to turn. Drilling is a different story. :)

But over all I'd love to work with it again - I just need to find out its durability. This pen will be sent out for a bit of testing very soon and I hope to hear good things soon.

My new Fahrney catalog has "renewable" buffalo horn as the composition of one of its pens. I guess that is ecologically more sound that Galapagos tortoise shell.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
