Rollerball Pen Under $60?

brianlg

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm new to buying fine pens. I know this forum is mainly about fountains, but I'd imagine that some of you have knowledge of rollerballs.

Anyways, today is my birthday, and I am looking to buy myself a nice rollerball for around/under $60. I know that this is not going to get me anything top notch, but funds are limited at the moment. Consider this my beginning of collecting pens.

Can you guys suggest me a nice pen that is beautiful looking, accessible, writes beautifully, and is under $60?

Thanks so much for your time helping me!

I have no firsthand experience with it, but possibly a Retro 1951 Tornado RB? It is supposed to write very well, is usually 20-30 dollars(I think), and comes in a variety of colors.

I have a brand new in the box Sailor Magellan Rollerball. I was going to ask $65 for it but we could possibly work something out if it's something you might be interested in.

It's the rollerball version of this pen in the same color:

Hi,

I think the Uniball Vision pens are very good as are the Pilot V5/V7 pens. Those can easily beat a lot of the more expensive pens in writing quality.

It's also important to keep in mind the cost and ease of purchasing refills for the pen you purchase. In my experience, the big box office supply stores and major chain stores (Walgreen, CVS, Target, etc.) generally carry a very limited selection of pen refills. Granted, you can often find the refills you need on the Internet, but unless you buy in large quantities, the shipping charges can result in a pretty expensive refill.

With that in mind, I would suggest a Parker Sonnet rollerball. The cost of the pen itself might run close to or a bit over your $60 limit, but Parker refills are still available at the office supply stores (Staples, OfficeMax, etc.).

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone! I'm looking into these. and @A440 that Lamy Swift is elegant, and looks like something I would love!

I've also been researching fountain pens just in case. So many options!

"researching fountain pens just in case" ... OH OH ... you've been infected. You went very quickly from RBs to FPs. You've got all of the symptoms, it's too bad really. Now you'll never leave. You're now a pen collector. And, so young. Enjoy your birthday.

Thanks everyone! I'm looking into these. and @A440 that Lamy Swift is elegant, and looks like something I would love!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
