Private Reserve Chocolate Ink

The photo in this thread is virtually the same thing I got when I filled my blue Lamy al-Star with Private Reserve Tanzanite today. It was frightening to see all that garbage hanging off my nib. I hate the pen soaking in diluted ammonia right now, which appears to be the treatment. I tossed the ink but could have dug it out of the trash if there were the least bit of concern by PR about this issue so they could analyze the problem. I'm exceptionally put off by the news that there has been no response to this number of instances. I have plenty of other places to spend my ink money these days and will keep this in mind in the future.

My J Herbin and PR inks are afflicted with SITB, perhaps due to the needless yanking of phenol in the name of health concerns.

I'm tempted to empty all 41 bottles of Noodler's down the sink, followed by PR, Gate City, and J Herbin. Better yet, I'll fill the toilet tank with all 50+ bottlles and hope for a technicolor bowl. What to use then? Diamine, Iro, waterman, MB, platinum, Sailor, and some shaeffer Brown.

It all comes down to "Is there any proof that [Noodler's/PR/Herbin] are bad? I fretted with this argument when smoking cigarettes in the 1970's.

I'll miss Golden brown, Galileo Manuscript, BWAS, and Beaver.

Why jettison the Noodler ones? I didn't see anything in this thread about SITB with those. Or did I miss something somewhere?

No, the Herbin and PR are the SITBers.I don't try to resurrect them in any way.

I think a certain amount of SITB issues are just a hazard of ink in general. What concerns me is when there appears to be a nucleus of trouble and there isn't the proper response from the maker. I'm not even demanding some sort of replacement/warranty -- I think my bottle was within a year of purchase but I am not certain. I'm talking about a response that engages the person with the problem and reassures us this isn't something acceptable and that if it is a recurring problem it will be looked into.

I believe that Mr. Smith was being ironic. Alcohol probably wouldn't ruin the ink, but it might hurt your pens. I would not recommend it. I would say that you should examine your inks, if you find sludge in any of them, throw that ink away. If you find sludge in more than one ink, you should consider your pens as being the source of cross-contamination. You might try some JB pen flush in all your pens, followed by flushing with tap water. Allow them to dry completely before refilling.

 

Or, as mhphoto says, "KILL IT WITH FIRE!" If you have added alcohol to your inks, they will burn that much better.
