Is The Omas Ogiva Guilloche "rare"?

Paul Raposo

Recommended Posts

I was told that this morning; that the Omas Ogiva Guilloche was a rare and hard to find pen, and apparently the price being asked was a good one.

Searching online, the Omas Ogiva Guilloche appears to be plentiful, and had at much cheaper prices than the over $400 price being asked.

Any opinions on this?

Do you mean the resin ones (and not the Visions demonstartors) from at least* the early 2000s? *I can't remember when the Guilloche was introduced.

I concur with your online research, they aren't particularly rare pens. In fact after the the 2005 restyling and product-mix change -- in which the Ogiva was killed off -- it was easy to find the Ogiva Guilloche on closeout, often less than the smooth classic big 557/S Ogivas.

I could see being asked USD400 if the pen is NOS in a store. Pre-owned, I think it's high. You could get a smooth 557/S Ogiva (with the change of getting an inhouse nib) for less than that on pre-owned market.

One of the rarer and harder to find Ogivas, is the original Ogiva Autunno in celluloid. While not an LE pen, the production period was quite short, probably less than a year according to my local store. It's production was stopped when the Ogiva was killed off.

I don't have that much isight in the market for this pen, but $400 seems very unlikely to me. It was a regular resin model at the time and $400 would be more than what I bought it for in 2005 in a very upscale brick & mortar.

I can only concur with Eric.

Hi, eric47.

It's actually identical to this one shown on nibs.com:

Thanks much for this information, too

Thanks for this info, Peter  It's a new and unused pen, but since it's north of $400--closer to $500 with taxes--that price is a bit hard to justify.

That's the one I thinking of. Mottishaw's $260 is pretty much where I remember seeing them as a starting point for a dealer -- and Mottishaw is an Omas dealer. On closeout I remember seeing them for less. 3-5 years ago Marco of Novelli had a number of auctions for them, with some going as low as approx. EUR 125 if I recall correctly. When stores were trying seriously to offload the old-style models, I was picked up some smooth Ogivas for about that much on closeout.

I don't think I'd pay USD 500 for that pen. That's approaching pre-owned celluloid Ogiva Autunno territory.

Thanks for the help on this, eric47. Beautiful pen, but I can't believe I was about to spend that kind of money. I think I'll hunt around for a used one.

I have one in sterling silver that a little over 3 years ago I paid around

$350 for, minus box and case. I would assume that it's probably worth

that right now. Since I'm particularly fond of sterling sliver,I'm glad I

bought it at the time.

That sounds really nice. There's something special about sterling silver pens :cloud9:

Is the weight substantial, or nicely balanced, compared to a resin pen?

Obviously with the overlay it weighs a smidgen more, but it is nicely balanced.

The ogiva autumno celluloid is one of my favorite pens, I will try to find one.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I did a google search on that pen, and the brown and gold trim go together beautifully.

That looks like a photo of the recent Ogivas that Novelli commissioned; for the furniture looks (plated) rose gold. The original Ogiva Autunno were yellow gold or HT (rhodium).

Here's a pair of original Autunnos with yellow gold furniture, which I think matches the celluloid particularly well -- it picks up the gold colored bits in the celluloid:

I have the irking feeling we have had this before, only the celluloid was red that time! But don't mind me...

Had what before? Paul's looking for an Ogiva and we're giving him options in and around the price he quoted for a Guilloche.

For a big resin Ogiva, I think I'd look for a MOMA (with 3 thin bands) myself.

The Ogiva Autunno was, pre-2005, the only standard (non-LE, non-commissioned) big modern Ogiva Omas ever made in celluloid -- as far as I know. (Armando Simoni club in Bologna did a black Lucens version.)

Mini celluloid Ogivas in blue and black gold came out a few years ago. It wasn't until Marco of Novelli commissioned Ogivas at the end of 2012 that we finally see other big Ogivas in celluloid. So the celluloid options for modern Ogiva are quite limited. I need to dig out my Autunnos, but they might actually be shorter than Marco's. My Wild Ogiva looks and feels quite large like a resin Ogiva. All modern old-style Omas celluloid pens are slightly smaller their resin cousins.

If you want vintage Ogivas, we can go there too. But the big ones are hard to come, and anything other than black hurts. Pearl gray is the most common, which is all I have, although I have seen other celluloid colors. A pearl gray celluloid Ogiva shouldn't be too hard to imagine. Although the vintage pens have more radical tapering -- the tapering starts sooner -- and there's no step for the cap.
