De Atramentis Handel Vs De Atramentis Petrol

This morning, I went to the Goulet Pens site to buy some De Atramentis George Frederick Handel ink, only to find out that it was out of stock. I noticed that the description for the Handel ink said it was Petrol color, which is the name of another De Atramentis ink that appears to be identical in color. Are George Frederick Handel and Petrol the same ink under two different names?

It's an interesting that the new forthcoming Diamine Handel, part of the Music Set, is a totally different colour altogether, isn't it?

In answer to your question, yes, I believe they are the same color. Any differences are not noticeable to my eyes. Just a difference in the label/name. :)

Thanks for the clarification. Why is the rationale for bottling the same ink under different names?

Given De Atramentis' prolific offerings, where else are there be duplications? I suspect there are many.

I am not sure, I suppose people feel different personal connections to some of the non-standard labels (i.e. historic people) or enjoy a scent versus non-scented, but it seems a bit redundant. We're in the process of paring down our offerings for that reason. There were no swabs done before we carried the brand, so now that we know what's similar and what's unique (and what's popular and not), we're streamlining our offerings.

I haven't done a full study yet, but there are quite a few dark blues that looks similar. Dark Blue, 2012 Year of the Dragon, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, Guiseppe Verdi, Raphael, Sherlock Holmes... they honestly look the same to me.

It would be great if you could clarify on your web site which ones may indeed be identical. Much easier to tell with swabs in hand than from viewing on line where similarities are even greater because of varying monitor calibrations etc.

Frankly DA's profuse offerings, with so many being so similar or with rediculously subtle differences, make me want to steer clear of them altogether. But that's just me.

I looked at the De Atramentis website awhile back, and there are (on their color chart) only about 60 inks listed. But if you look carefully at the links for the individual inks on their main page, in the upper right hand corner they list what the "color" is for all their inks, including the scented and "specialty" inks. So it turns out there are, for example, a number of inks listed as "silbergrau" ("silver grey" if you go to the English language version of the website), such as "New Year's Day" and "Pyotr Illych Tchaikowsky", as well as some of the scented inks (and the apparently no-longer available Albrecht Dürer was *also* "silver grey", IIRC...).

And of course their "Tchaikowsky" is a completely different color from new Diamine ink of the same name, which is a blue. And both are totally different from the Noodler's one....

Go figure.

As to *why* they renamed/relabeled the ink? Dunno.

I can't clarify exactly on these 2 inks... but it is a fact that many De A inks are the same, but just re-named: E.g. their Aubergine and Brandenburger Gate as I mentioned earlier. Also there are many -- if not very many -- "normal" De A inks renamed after a well-known composer or country or flower or fruit.....

Exactly "Petrol" itself is a good example. A search for "petrol" above all in their own site shows various names ands prices, and this has been discussed here before.

I'm pretty sure that DeAtramentis repeats ink colors in several series.

Take this example: Oriental Red, London (part of the city series, which I don't think the Goulets stock) and Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle are all the same ink color with 3 different names and 3 different labels.

That being said I would probably buy the historical persons variety over the standard series because of the interesting label even though that's kind of a silly reason.

Parker: Sonnet Flighter, Rialto Red Metallic Laque, IM Chiseled Gunmetal, Latitude Stainless, 45 Black, Duovac Blue Pearl Striped, 51 Standard Black, Vac Jr. Black, 51 Aero Black, 51 Vac Blue Cedar, Duofold Jr. Lapis, 51 Aero Demi Black, 51 Aero Demi Teal, 51 Aero Navy Gray, Duofold Pastel Moire Violet, Vac Major Golden Brown, Vac Deb. Emerald, 51 Vac Dove Gray, Vac Major Azure, Vac Jr. Silver Pearl, 51 Vac Black GF Cap, 51 Forest Green GF cap, Vac Jr. Silver Pearl, Duovac Senior Green & Gold, Duovac Deb. Black, Challenger Black, 51 Aero Midnight, Vac. Emerald Jr., Challenger Gray Pearl, 51 Vac Black, Duofold Int. Black, Duofold Jr. Red.

I don't know that it is all that silly -- when I was in NYC I went to Art Brown and bought a bottle of De Atramentis Tchaikowsky, even though it appears to be the same ink as their regular Silver Grey (both were available and in stock). Of course, if they still had their Albrecht Dürer (which was apparently also Silver Grey) I would have bought it in a heartbeat, just on general principle....
