What ink do you have in your Lamy AL-star? It looks lovely.

It's Diamine Ochre, thanks! I have a review up on my website here if you want to check it out.

What camera did you use to take the pics?

Also, I want one of these pens now!

I use either my phone (HTC One S) or my Olympus Pen E-P3, the pictures for this review were done with the Olympus.

Definitely get a Metro!

Great review! Thanks for sharing. Now I think I'll have to be picking one up.

Also, great to find another terrific pen-oriented blog. Keep it up!

Thanks! The encouragement really helps, I still feel like I'm getting my sea legs when it comes to blogging.

Thanks! I actually have (and love) this ink. I usually use EF nibs though, it looks fantastic in your broad.

I was browsing Pilot's pages while looking for other color options (Brian Goulet mentioned it in his video). While I didn't find anything named Metropolitan, there is a really similar range called Cocoon (http://www.pilot.co.jp/products/pen/fountain/cocoon/index.html) that costs 3000 yens (almost 40USD with the current rate). I am surprised that Metropolitan is so affordable.

well, it actually comes in 3 colour, blk, silver and gold

u might need to google it directly

Lol, I am aware of that. I just don't like the current three available (Brian Goulet mentioned that he and Rachel are trying to get Pilot to import more color option to the US that what are already available) so I just hopped to the Japanese site and found the Metropolitan lookalike "Coccoon". The Coccoon comes with a much more attractive color selection...and a higher price tag.

While your review is really nice/helpful, I find that black ink isn't the best ink to use to test a pen because I can't tell how wet it is by looking at the writing.

I have a metro too and every non-black ink I used with it turns out a lot darker than any other pen I use it with.

Yes, Metro's M is wetter than 78Gs, and mine skipped a bit sideways. Not a lot but enough to make me swap in a 78G section.

Hey,

That's actually a really good point that I've never taken into consideration before. I'll definitely switch up the ink from black in my next review.

Thanks for the tip!

I just received my Met. this morning, and absolutely fell in love... For about 4 hours - I wrote checks, grocery list, notes, etc. then, while writing my first letter, I looked at my fingers, and the darn thing is leaking !

I still love this bargain pen, but now I gotta find the leak and fix it. Drat ! I love the nib, and for me the section fits nicely. I got the gold zig-zag, and like everyone, I'm waiting to see how the finish holds up with regular use. They really engineered a fine writing instrument, I think.

Take care, everyone

Today I finally had a chance to use my Metropolitan for a sustained period (a three-hour meeting). I've been a fan since I bought it, but I was still surprised at how comfortable the pen was in terms of balance and smoothness of the nib. And the icing on the cake: it didn't dry out when I set it down uncapped for a few minutes. What a fine pen for the price . . . .

Is there an European vendor that has this pen? The shipping cost from the US equals the value of the pen, I would much rather purchase from a local vendor, if any.

Thanks! Although there isn't much of a difference in the final price anyway. But a link to european vendor is always nice to have in my bookmarks.

Unfortunately the UK price for the Met is higher than the US price which probably doesn't help.

Thanks for the great review. I've been considering the Metropolitan for a while -- getting ready to order a silver one. I think I'll also order a Plumix and swap in the 1.0 "stub" nib to the Metro, 'cause I've absolutely fallen in love with stub nibs. Then I'll have a (hopefully) sturdy "flighter" for everyday use. I love the 78G but use it sparingly because of the plastic construction. The silky smoothness of even the low-end Pilot nibs never fails to amaze me.

After buying my first "Met" and enjoying the very smooth medium nib, I bought two more from Staples ( on sale back then for $10.50 w/ free shipping) and swapped out the nibs for a fine (aka western extra fine) and a broad (aka italic/stub) from a couple of 78Gs that I own. Really enjoy th solid feeling of the "Met" and the writing from both the "B" and "F".

And Idefintely agree with pageRyder that even the inexpensive Pilot nibs feel good!
