Esterbrook Section Won't Fit Back Into The Barrel

BamaPen

Recommended Posts

I recently bought an Esterbrook desk pen in pretty good condition. The section was not pushed entirely into the barrel, but I didn't think much about that. I heated and pulled the section, cleaned the old sac remains off the nipple, fitted a new sac, and attempted to reinsert the section into the barrel. It won't go!

When I say it won't go, I mean that I can't even get it started into the barrel at all. I don't know how something that came out pretty easily won't even began to go back in. I've heated everything and tried to reinsert with no luck at all.

What should I do?

Use some gentle heat on the barrel threads and then try putting the section back in. That should do it, you could also try putting the section in the freezer to make it smaller.

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

hmmmm... I like the idea of heat better than cold. Cold makes plastic brittle, and even a section could break when frozen. Warming the threads though will help to keep the barrel from cracking. It needs to be a snug fit, and you'll find that when it gets most of the way it, it will tend to pop/lock into place, but you can rotate the section so that the nib is in line with the lever. All a bit unnerving, I know... Your caution is to be commended.

...and just before you put it back together, lightly dust the neck of the section with talc. It works as a lubricant.

Are you sure you have cleaned all the old sac off the nipple? If there is some left, the new sac will not let the section slip back in.

Good point. The need to do that is a given, but I've seen the old sac still on the sac nipple often enough that I shouldn't assume that it's been done.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I had indeed made certain that all the old sac was off the nipple - I took Ron Z's seminar at the Ohio Pen Show and he stressed that repeatedly. Ron's suggestion to use heat and not be too shy worked perfectly. I warmed it up to about 140 degrees and gave it a push with my section pliers and in it went. I used some of the Main Street Pens pen polish on the barrel and taper and it looks like new.

Mission accomplished.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
