Question About Snorkels?

Very interesting. The latest version of the listing says that "someone" won it for $55. Yeah, right. Is this kind of (bleep) considered "legal" on eBay?

I subscribe to The Rule of 10 (pens, that is)

1) Parker Sonnet 1st gen 2) Pelikan 200 yellow 3) Parker 51 vac 4) Esterbrook trans J 5) Esterbrook LJ "Bell System Property" 6) Sheaffer Snorkel Valiant fern green 7) Waterman 52.5V 8) Parker 75 cisele 9) open 10) open (I'm hankering for a Doric)

I have not been following the listin or bidding, but *have* been following this thread, since I just picked up a Snorkel Valiant in an antiques mall a couple of weeks before Christmas.

Mine is admittedly not Fern Green (I have no idea what are considered rare vs. common colors, but *appears* to be Pastel Gray) and I have no clue about whether the nib has any flex to it -- heck, I couldn't even find a nib width marking -- but I didn't pay anything like what the seller was asking, or even anything like what the supposed final price of $55 was. In fact, even if there hadn't been a sale, I would have paid roughly half the final price of the one on eBay; because everything in the store was 25% off that week (I lucked out on timing!) I actually paid a bit less (although I gather I may have to dump some more money into repairs).

Did the pen being sold have any sort of description as to its condition (e.g., "mint", "working condition", etc.)? Or was it just a case of "Hey, I have this fountain pen for sale and I think I should get $400 bucks for it because it's a cool looking old pen and people collect these, right?"

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Regarding snorkel Ebay auctions; followed a orange-red Sheaffer Snorkel with stainless steel cap yesterday, with a F5 triumph nib, restored, looks like unused/new to me; it went for, believe it or not, 511 USD...

I saw that. I bet that was because someone thought it was a Fiesta Red, which I believe is a pretty rare colour, if I recall correctly.

They thought right, no doubt.

I just bought a gray Sentinel to restore at $25. Some risk is involved. We'll see how it works out.

I know my id is "mhosea", but you can call me Mike. It's an old Unix thing.
