Best Low-End Stub Nibbed Pen?

Quarzac

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm looking for an affordable stub nibbed pen- my roommate has a Sheaffer he let me try, and I like how fancy it makes my writing look. What's the best one for ~$30? ~$50? Thanks!

could go the route of a lamy safari or al star and get a stub nib for it (some sellers will even swap these in for you I believe) and they come in 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9mm varieties. Even cheaper is the Pilot 78G in B nib which is actually a stub and can be had for around $10-15 most places online. I've also heard of some people taking the stub from Pilot pluminix pens and putting them on the Pilot Prera for a nicer body. Apparently these nibs (and sections) are also swappable with the 78G.

The pilot plumix medium nib pen has a stubbish character. It is actually way under your budget at around $6.00. You can have oodles left over for ink. I believe this pen can use a converter or can be converted to an Eyedropper as well.

I love the 1.1 mm stub on my TWSBI 540, but they have stopped selling them now while they upgrade to the 580. It is at the top end of your budget, but if you can find a retailer that still has them you get a very well designed pen.

There are great choices for stubs in your price range! My faves under $50 in order of preference:

Lamy Safari/Alstar/Vista with 1.1 nib $30 shipping+converter

Pilot 78g B (stub) $25

Pilot Plumnix, slightly stubbish smaller width about 0.7mm compared to the 78g B nib

http://fp-writings.blogspot.com/ custom ground nibs from 0.60-0.9mm widths. He sells a lot of pens under $50 with shipping. Unfortunately they are mostly dicey Chinese pens, but ever once in a while he has a Parker or a Lamy. Own a ground Lamy Alstar from him that I just love.

I have a few inexpensive stubs that I really like. The Pilot Plumix is fantastic, and you can put the nib on a Pilot Prera if you want a nicer body.

Pilot 78G Broad (scroll about halfway down) is a fantastic stub. I have a couple of these and just ordered one more. Very lightweight which could either be a good or bad thing depending on your preference.

Nemosines have the option of a .6mm and .8mm stubs. The .6mm on a Fission is my absolute favorite.

The Safari comes with a 1.1 mm nib option (also 1.5 and 1.9 but those are probably too wide for everyday writing) which a lot of people enjoy. But I find that its the last one I usually reach for.

ETA - I put a $4 CON-20 in my Plumix so I can use it with bottled ink which I highly recommend.

The Pilot Plumix M is a Pilot 78g's B nib. Both are fantastic stubs :)

The Plumix is nice but hard to carry around. I don't like the section (where you grip) of the Lamy Safari but it might not bother you. The TWSBI 540 is available in colors but not in clear and the stub is an add on but I think it's worth it.

+1 on the Lamy 1.1 suggestion. Haven't tried the Plumix. I have a 78G B but don't much care for it - too dry. Might try to widen the feed channel one of these days.

+1 on the TWSBI 540 with 1.1 nib - very nice line variation and smooth like butter!

You can find a Sheaffer NoNonsense calligraphy set on eBay for between $10-20. Get one of the older style ones with a screw-on cap, they're better made than the current Viewpoint calligraphy sets. You could also try a Pilot Plumix or a Pilot 78G B, but in my experience they were both a little dry. The Lamy Safari/Vista/Al-Star italic nibs are nice, too. I have a 1.1 and it works very well. With the Sheaffer, though, you get more than one nib included with the price (usually 3 or more).

A 78G B with a wet ink is lovely for a tenner. With Iroshizuku it punches 100 lbs. above its weight.

You can get a stub nib on a Monteverde Invincia that writes really well.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
