Favourite "disposable" Pen

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

One circustance leading to another, I am now for the next 3 months in a situation where I can't use "expensive" pens (i.e, I need to be able to use only pens that I can throw out), and I know this topic has been done before, but I just thought I would gather the collective opinion of the largest pen network in the world.

So my question to all my fellow FPNers is:

What is your favourite pen that you can throw out?

e.g. Pilot G2 (not my favourite but just an example), these can be refillable or not.. and I'm not talking about cost here that doesn't phase me because all of these pens are cheap relative to what I normally write with. It can be ballpoint, rollerball or gel etc. and one that would be relatively available.

I hope the question is clear enough, and I look forward to hearing your answers.

Regards,

Adrian

The Pilot Varsity offers good service. It accepts neglect generously.

You didn't say where you will be, or what kind of environment. It's

okay to tell. We don't know who you are.

This is a good deal on Ebay.

Practically speaking, a 10-pack of BIC stick pens might suit you.

I took a three pack of the multi-color BIC disposable fountain pens on a trip. They didn't leak on the plane and I used them the whole trip. They have a large ink supply. The pens still have ink in them so they now reside at work and clients can use them. They are the only FPs of mine that I will let a client touch.

For BPs and gel pens almost any multi-pack from a name manufacturer will get the job done. I had a marketing reason to use green ink pens. I ordered dozen on-line Papermate green stick pens that worked fine.

My travel companions are a 3-pack of Bic fountain pens (as mentioned above), a couple of Uniball Vision Elite Bolds, and a couple of Pilot G2's. Boring but effective.

(I know you did not mention travel, but that's when I use disposables.)

I've picked up some 10- and 15-pack inexpensive Chinese carry-about pens. I keep one with me most of the time and don't worry about losing or damaging one when I'm out and about. Here's a review of the Hero 266 and the Yongsheng 533:

And this is the Lanbitou which is also nice but its size is both an advantage (portable pocket pen) and disadvantage (low capacity):

I don't consider the Jinhao 159 a disposable pen, it is too good for that, but it wouldn't give me a headache when I would have to dispose one, considering its price (<$10).

I too purchased a 3-pack of Bic fountain pens. I take one down with me when I bring my breakfast and morning paper to enjoy by the pool in the morning. Perfect for doing the daily cross word and I don't have to worry if it falls on the concrete!

When the "restoration bug" bit me, I bought many old, cheap pens at flea markets and reconditioned them. Most of the nibs are untipped, although they write very well. I soaked out the dried ink and repaced the sacs. I can use these and feel no qualms about heaving them over the side.

Cool, it seems that people use these Bic fountain pens, I have never heard of them.

C'mon guys, I'm keen to hear more answers!

At the moment I am just using Pilot G2, and while they are great pens, I feel that its a bit boring, plus everybody writes with them! Perhaps I'll wait a couple more days then head down to my local office supplies and check out what's on offer.

One of two Bic disposables I got was an unreliable writer. IMHO the Varsity is a much better bet, though it's wide for a Pilot M. The Bic is even wider.

For a non-FP, readily accessible pen, I like the Pilot VBall 0.5.

Another vote for the Bic disposables (if you can tolerate the boring ink they come with).

If you want to use your own ink, you could get some 10 packs of the Hero 616 or similar Chinese cheapies, some of them might need tweaking to be acceptable writers.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Platinum Preppy yet (unless I missed something). I've had trouble with some the caps cracking, but you did say disposable. The Preppies I have still surviving are nice writers.

I like that, while the Pilot Varsity is meant to be disposable, it actually can be refilled easily enough, twisting out the nib and feed together and then eyedroppering the barrel. I got a 7 pack of these, different colors, and actually emptied and refilled the pink and red ones, since I didn't want those colors of ink. The pack is at work if needed, and I've even given a couple away. Good way to get other people interested in fountain pens, if that appeals to you.

I don't think I'd throw away a pen that was meant to be refilled unless it was hopelessly broken, but I've got a couple of Platinum Preppies that could be lost or left behind without too much regret. They write very nicely, and cost about $4 with one sample cartridge included. Four of those would last you for a while.

Platinum Preppy's are my favorite cheapie fountain pens. I always have one inked at the office, one at home. I refill the cartridge with a blunt-nosed syringe. I now have a Preppy Highlighter at the office as well.

Ballpoint: Whatever takes a Fisher Space Pen refill.

Rollerball: Anything with a Schmidt G2-style refill.

Gel: Probably a G2.

FP: Varsity.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
