Sula Jane And Earl Pen Sheaf

For those who did not see this announcement last week, Sula Jane and Earl (SJ&E) launched a new line of pen sheafs. Normally, I don't hang out in this part of FPN, but the arrival of my two Danitrio custom pens made looking for a new way to carry my pens a necessity. I saw the announcement so I checked out the SJ&E table at the SF Pen show this weekend. Kelly of SJ&E was super nice and helpful when I broke out the two pens. Unfortunately, the stock models were not even close to being able to fit the two Genkai sized pens. Kelly offered up the idea of making a custom one to fit my pens. She even gave me a sample sheaf to play around with while I plan my custom sheaf.

Here's the front side of the standard sized pen sheaf.

One thing that attracted me to the SJ&E sheafs was the dazzling array of colors and patterns. For those that know me, plain colors are not my thing. For the sample I chose a nice yellow colored sheaf with flower designs. These sheafs are made entirely from soft colored leather. The leather is soft and looking at Kelly's personal sheaf, it should get softer and more supple with use. The sheaf itself is made of two double sided pieces of leather as is the strap. The pockets and flap are a single layer of leather.

Inside the sheaf, there is a flap stitched with the SJAE logo and pockets for three pens.

The pockets are sized for average sized pens. The leather appears to be somewhat ink resistant. I got some Platinum Carbon Black on the leather but was able to get it off completely with some saliva and rubbing. I'm not sure it is BSB resistant. The stitching will get discolored if you get ink on the stitches.

Stitching is very nice and neat. This picture shows the quality of the stitching.

Each sheaf has a leather strap that is sown into the sheaf. The strap itself is reinforced with a line of stitching on both sides.

Here is a picture of the sheaf filled with three of my medium sized vintage Italian pens.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8457/8069527062_afb27c2e4a_c.jpg

The standard model shown here would work well with most vintage pens and most moderately sized modern pens. I shoved three Nakaya Neo Standards into the sheaf. With the three Neo Standards, the fit was a little tight but it worked just fine. I think as the leather gets broken in things will loosen up a bit.

Here is the sheaf rolled up and ready to go.

The whole thing makes a nice package and the leather will protect your pens. The strap was able to wrap neatly around with the three medium sized pens. If you use a lot of large pens, you might want to ask Kelly for a slightly longer strap.

The whole reason I was looking for a pen sheaf/wrap/case/whatever was to hold the two custom Danitrio Genkais.

This current size is a bit too small. I'm going to need the special 'Godzilla' model. :roflmho:

The SJ&E pen sheaf is a nice quality product. It's major selling point to me is the use of interesting colored leather. The range of colors and patterns is enough to satisfy the most discerning. Although the sheaf I picked out was pretty bright, you can also get ones that are more subdued. It's a pretty effective way to carry your pens. The SJ&E is a nice alternative to the usual cloth wraps and leather pen cases. Go and check these out.

Repeated here for your convenience are the pictures I took at the show showing the various lines.

Nice review, Ricky -- great pictures. Dix has pulled me away from the usual black leather cases I typically choose with her colorful designs. Neat trick. Seriously.

Very bright and looks to be well made too. It would be nice to combine this with Haida or Anishanabek first nation art designs, wolf, bear, raven, whale, clan motifs for example. Also, a slip cover for larger notebooks and the moleskines plus storage for 2-3 pens with larger barrels would be excellent.

Rob Maguire (Plse call me "M or Mags" like my friends do...)I use a Tablet, Apple Pencil and a fountain pen. Targas, Sailor, MB, Visconti, Aurora, vintage Parkers, all wonderful.

Ricky :

How would these work for Pelikan M400 through M800 series pens, with more emphasis on the 400 size ? I'll admit some interest in getting a leather "sheaf" if it would fit these pens.

The answer is yes.

I should add an addendum to my impressions above. I've been using the sheaf all week and the leather has loosened up. I've been carrying my daily assortment of three Nakaya Neo Standards. After the first day, the sheaf loosened up and it works very well now for the larger pens.

The M400 is a smaller pen should have no problem. The Neo Standard is about the same size as a M1000. I would say the standard sheaf would be great for any the M400-M1000. So you would be fine with your pens.

Here's a pic with three Nakayas.

Here's a pic with three small pens. I don;t own any M400s but I used three Columbus 94s which are roughly the same size.

Here they are folded up. Notice it's a smaller package compared to the three Nakayas.

I've been waiting for this (since I couldn't make the SF Pen Show). I just ordered one for my mother - she's going to love it!

This one would be good for my Nakaya Rainbow.

Maybe a twelve pen version.

Wow that's quick shipping - thanks so much! The hardest part is picking a color combination.

The multi-colored woven sheaf would be ideal for a rainbow of colored pens, maybe you could even specify colors for the woven pieces, to match the pens. Oooohhh, that would be SWEET!

Good idea!

But first, I need the Godzilla sized model for the two Danitrios.

So many nice ones were at the SF Show... but I don't see them all on your website. Guess I'll have to wait for the LA Show for the large selection :-)

Would the standard size fit a Nakaya long cigar?

It's going to just miss. It would be tight even if it did.

Have Kelly add about .6 to .75 inches to the width.

The dip pen model, listed under custom work, fits the Long Cigar. When mine is loaded with conventional pens, rather than oblique holders, it carries a Long Cigar, a Duofold Centennial, and a Large Aurora 88 in mine.

thanks Mickey for the tip. The custom dip pen wrap looks good, but i am looking for something a bit smaller as it has to fit in my notebook bag (its a macbook air - no room to spare). I was wondering if a long cigar will fit the standard size; the wrap is 7" high, and the Nakaya long cigar is ~6.6"; so it should fit, but may be a close call - anyone tried it?

I just checked on my wife's sheaf. The standard length is just a little bit short, call it a 1/4 - 1/2 inch too short, for the long cigar. You can get the long cigar into the sheaf, but the flap doesn't lay right. If you were going to carry more than one long cigar, you would also want the pockets a little bit wider, too, say an extra 1/8 - 1/4 inch.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mickey, thanks for the review, and thanks to Sula Jane & Earl for making such a nice product. The one I purchased for my mother was unwrapped and opened yesterday and was very well received. She absolutely loved it and couldn't wait to fill it with some of her pens.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
