Broad-Edge Nib Comparison Chart

I thought others might find this handy (sizes are approximate and don't always match up perfectly from brand to brand, but this should get you in the ballpark.).

You're welcome! I hope to expand it, to include EF and BB+ nibs, too... I just have to figure out how to create a bigger table where I can still have a readable font. But I suppose these are the pen sizes most people use day to day.

EF 0.32mm

F 0.44mm

M 0.58mm

B 0.7mm

BB 1mm

 

The Lamy 1.1, however, is somewhere between M and B in my experience. And it's hard to find any size other than M these days.

The chart sizes are meant for calligraphers, so yes, the fine broad-edge italic-type nib will measure considerably larger than a pointed fine, or even a pointed broad that most would use for everyday handwriting here on FPN.

 

Thanks for the Pilot Plumix measurements... I didn't even know there were other nib sizes available for that pen!

Sorry, fiberdrunk, I meant the Lamy 1.1 seems to me to fall between the Plumix M and B! So Pilot and Lamy obviously measure in different ways, but I've never bothered to check which is more accurate.

Oh, ok! I see now. It reminds me of the custom-cut Pilot Parallel 1.0 mm (which Paper & Ink Arts cuts in-house, and from what I hear, John Neal Bookseller does now as well)... that thing measures more like a broad and is wider than 1 mm. I have a few of them, and they are all that way.

thank you for the comparisons. i'll be needing to get more broad nib. i've been using speedball nibs, but have been looking at maybe purchasing the mitchell nibs this time around. any suggestions? the reservoirs on the mitchell look like they hold more ink than the speedball nibs, but i'm not sure

Yes, it is italic too. As you can see from someone's flickr photo of the leaflet, line variation between thick and thin strokes isn't as much as at the larger sizes.
