Heavy Fountain Pens Options

Dear All,

I hope you are well. I am a great fan of reasonably weighty fountain pens, preferably even with the lid off and I was wondering if there are any particular models that you have had experience with that may suit my needs. I already own a Caran D'ache Ecridor which I have had for 10 years and a Cross Apogee which I just bought - both have a good weight but I was curious of other heavier options.

The two heaviest pens in my collection are of the opposite ends of the price spectrum:

 

The Caran d'Ache Leman Bicolor weights 30 grams without cap and 47 with cap. Wonderful pen by the way. Not sure if the nib is the same style as the Ecridor.

 

The Jinhao 159 weigs 31 grams without the cap and 49 with.

The Sheaffer Bamboo, with its pewter casing, is the heaviest pen I have ever held. It's even more massive if posted.

The Montegrappa large size Reminiscence is 43 g while the large Eleganza, Privilege or Privilege Deco are 45 g; my Yard-O-Led Grand Victorians weigh in at about 70 g; my Sheaffer Legacy series Sterling silver pens are around 42 g; the Graf von Faber Castell Classic is a light 38.7 g.

The new Lamy 2000m all metal version is a really solid heavy pen, I was surprised when I got mine. It weighs in at 54 grams before filling with ink!

ST Dupont pens are also usually heavy and if you want I could weigh several of their models.

Visconti Opera Masters with the metal knob at the filler are quite heavy.

My silver Onoto Magna tops the scales at 93g.

I own a Red Retro 1951 'Double 8' that weighs a ton, so much so that my hand gets tired writing with it. I'd be willing to let it go for a fair price. You interested?

I am waiting to get back my Caran D'Ache as it is being repaired and I wanted to see how much it weighs, its not super heavy but it has a reasonable weight and a good reference. There are some good possibilities thank to you guys, many of the brands are new to me. I will write to each of you fully once I get my pen back. Thank again.

I also prefer chunkier and weightier pens. My fairly modest selection (not collection) includes a Conway Stewart Belgravia and an Onoto vermeil Magna, both of which are in the region of 90gm.

 

You may, however, like to consider something which is a fraction of their price and is much more unusual. Not only that, the pens are made in Derbyshire.

 

A couple of weeks ago I bought a pen from Scribblings Pens. They are available in various models and wooden finishes. The Elite range includes the Statesman and Majestic models, both of which are large and heavy. I have no details of exact weights but they feel only marginally lighter than my silver pens.

The MB Verne WE has an anchor for a cap that makes the posted pen very heavy and unbalanced.

The Yard-O-Led sterling silver pens have plenty of heft!

My heaviest pen turned out, surprisingly, one of my favourites. It is a Tombow Zoom 505 fp AKA Havanna. It is also quite reasonably priced at about £40 excluding VAT ( I got it from Cultpens in the UK because Tombow do not distribute it in North America). It is one of my smoothest pens, it is full sized though not oversized, a classic cigar shape with a brushed metal finish, extremely sturdy and it's superbly balanced posted or unposted. It also gets noticed and complimented even though it's more sober than blingy.

My Caran d'Ache Ecridor Retro weighs 34.4g.

I think my only pen that could fit into this category is the Waterman Man (or Le Man) 100, a pen designed to be used posted, which leads to a significant weight, yet well balanced

Granted it is a custom made pen, and therefore somewhat expensive. I've not weighed it yet, but I hope to do so tomorrow evening.

I have three heavy pens - Caran d'Ache Leman - 47 g; Yiren 615, 51g and a Jinhao 1200 Golden Dragon - 50 g. They are all balanced in use provided they are unposted. Posted, they are quite unbalanced! The Jinhao feels like a large pen but the other two feel "normal". See my review of the Leman v. Yiren 615.
