I have a custom Mina in shiro tamenuri and can confirm that the result is very dark. Mine looks more black/red than brown. Except at the section where it's lighter, and so when you uncap the pen, there is that sweet surprise.

 

My EF nib went to Michael Masuyama for a perfect grind/flow for moi.

Thanks! I must say, your blog is another inspiration - I love the mindful way you have acquired your pens and your thoughts on your Edisons and Danitrios are as beautiful as the pens themselves.

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

Ernest is finishing one just exactly the same for me right now! I'm so excited, and trying to have a Zen attitude as I wait. The very hot weather apparently made applying the coats of Urushi impossible,as it dried far too dark if he did. The medium nib is with Greg M for a delicious stub!

Congratulatins to the OP on that beautiful Mina! Now, where is my shield? wub.gif

Wow, the shiro-tamenuri looks gorgeous on the Mina! I think one of the most incredible things is how different urushi can look from pen to pen. It really reinforces the one-of-a-kind moniker. I am a proud owner of one of the Limited Edition Urushi Minas. I write with it every day. And when I'm not writing with it, I'm usually caressing or admiring it!

Wow, the shiro-tamenuri looks gorgeous on the Mina! I think one of the most incredible things is how different urushi can look from pen to pen. It really reinforces the one-of-a-kind moniker. Chris, that Parker is going to look so cool! It's really interesting to hear that the weather can effect the urushi application process.

 

TrinityTam, I think another Mina is in my future - I might get one of Brian's ebonite or celluloid ones. Those LE Minas are indeed gorgeous :puddle:

Quinden that has got to be the most beautiful pen I have ever seen! Wow. One question, I have often thought about getting one of these "grail pens" although I would be too scared to ever take it out and actually use it. Do you plan on using it as a daily cary pen or just use it at home?

Peppwaves03, I do indeed carry it to work every day and write in my journal with it every night - I have a Visconti 2 pen case which is pretty solid and lined with felt, so I am pretty confident that it will be okay. Pretty much all of my pens are bought to be used, and this one is no exception! :)

Oh holy heck. Why do I read these topics? Watch out, wallet. The Mina and the P51 are amazing. The juxtaposition of the arrow cap of the P51 with the urushi barrel...like a superficial little joke with a much deeper underlying theme.

Beautiful pen! I very much admire the work of Ernest Shin and have recently sent a pen to him for a urushi finish. I'm biding my time now for the 4 month wait, but I know this will be an exceptional pen!

You can use the Mina as an eyedropper- just need a bit of silicone grease on the threads (when I got my Urushi Mina there was a little pot of grease supplied with it for this purpose). I'd see it as an eyedropper that can take a cc rather than as a cc in fact.

That is good to know! I had thought about doing the eyedropper conversion, especially now that I have some syringes from the Goulets :)

Thanks Hanoi, I really like it a lot! It's a constant in my daily carry. I think Ernest really does amazing work and I have ordered another custom pen from him, which I can't wait to see.

Fountain pens are like weapons. They just make your pocket bleed so much.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
