Platinum President Recommendations?

A friend let me adopt a 3776 Higo Zogan and this was my first rodeo wtih a Platinum nib. I liked it and now am wanting to get another Platinum pen to try, possibly in Medium.

The ribbed looks interesting and it is a contender. However, I see few reviews of Presidents and wonder if the section is as comfortable as the one they use on the slip capped 3776s and Ribbed. No Platinum dealers in my area so try before I buy is not an option either.

Also, does the nib on the President feel different from those on the 3776 series? I would asume ink flow to be identical?

Thanks for any tips you can provide!

I have a number of Platinums, including a yellow President. I like it a lot; it's a bit bigger than many of the pens fitted with the 3776 nib. The President nib is also a bit larger. As far as performance goes, all my Platinums are excellent writers and I have no favourites beyond preferring their music nibs, which aren't for everyone. The President is the size of a Sailor 1911 (the bigger one.) I don't notice any particular difference between the feel of the President nib and the 3776 nibs. I like them all. AS with most Japanese nibs, the sizes are going to run about one size smaller than modern western nibs. The medium you are contemplating will be equivalent to a western fine (or thereabouts.)

Strang,

Thanks for the reply. I am familiar with the line widths and have come to love the more delicate lines that the Japanese nibs lay down. I have also tried the Music nibs and while they are a luxurious experience, I may not have a daily use for them. Perhaps a C or BB cut to an italic would be more useful to me and the paper I am condemened to employ at my workplace.

I will seek out a President to try but another Platinum model has me curious. The New Century is available with a Soft Fine which should allow for some pleasant variation without crossing into the realm of flex. I'll see how they fare side by side.

I really like the Soft Fine on my Shoji 3776. The Platinum president is a really great pen as well. The President is 142 mm long, The Shoji is 139 mm. The section tapers from 11.8 to 10.3 mm on the President, 10.7 to 10.3 on the Shoji. I would say that the nibs are similar--and fairly stiff, unless you get the soft fine!

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I got my President on offer from Pen Heaven, it was only about £20 more than a 3776 BURGOYNE. At that price its a great pen, but the list price is £100 more than a 3776. At that price I wouldn't bother, its only very slightly larger than the 3776 and the nib is as nice, but not different enough to warrant the extra cost. The quality of the plastics are the same, so unless you get it on offer you're paying £100 for a tiny size increase and a different nib that writes the same!

I have a quick question to all of you Platinum President users. Does the Platinum President have that Slip n' Seal Technology like the Platinum 3776 to prevent ink dry out? Thank you. I am apologizing early if this question hijacks this thread.

No, it does not have Slip n' Seal Technology like the Platinum 3776. However, I have never faced ink dry problem with this pen even after non-usage for a month.

It's not slip n seal, but there is an inner cap and it works well.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
