  1. 1. Would you use a fountain pen to defend yourself if assaulted?

And on that basis, I am not good enough to defend myself with a pen... unless it was a giant pen!

In other news, you shouldn't google "largest pen" at work >_< If anyone needs me I'm going to sleep under my desk.

I have over the years used my P75,P51, MB 144 and Man 100 as very powerful weapons of mass destruction of my opposition. They have been responsible for many guided missals.

.....wonder what the Catholic Church thinks of that?

I suspect His Holiness as we speak is using his fountain pen as a canon on that very point.

Sounds like a load of Papal Bull - missing the XF point.

Well it might be a magnificat point instead of an XF point ?

This sounds like the start of another topic... pairing guns with pens ninja.gif

I have a Schrade Tactical (handwriting sample here: http://scribbledemonboddo.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/schrade-tactical-2012.html) and friend with several black belts immediately recognised its potential as a weapon. 'Aactually a bit alarming as I just wanted a big pen!

I am surprised nobody mentioned the famous scene from 'Grosse Pointe Blank...'

And what did we learn from this ?

Always carry a rollerbal as backup. :roflmho:

I read somewhere on the internet that a guy was forced to leave his fountain pens at a security control, because the morons though they where "knives" (sigh).

Lord, grant me the serenity to avoid the pens I don't need,

the dough for those I need and the wisdom to know the difference.

This whole thread makes me feel very uneasy

Pens and paper everywhere, yet all our hearts did sink,

Pens and paper everywhere, but not a drop of ink.

When I go into battle, I don't have a rollerball as back up, as I have my pencil with lead in it, anyway my fountain pen is all I need as I only need one shot !

Quite the range of responses. To the original point (no pun intended) of the pen as a preferred weapon...no it is not going to be my first choice. If it is my only choice ....and I am honestly so scared as to be using it in self defense....pretty sure gold nibs can be replaced and all..... I would use it to lash out or scrawl my last words.....

Rob Maguire (Plse call me "M or Mags" like my friends do...)I use a Tablet, Apple Pencil and a fountain pen. Targas, Sailor, MB, Visconti, Aurora, vintage Parkers, all wonderful.

Hey Mods,

Doesn't this topic belong in the Chatter Forum, along with scintillating topics like "Where can I find a cool Uranium Ink for my Pen?", "Is there an ink poisonous enough that if I write with it and anyone else touches the paper they will die?", "Where can I buy a VP style pen that will fire a 12 gauge round when I double click the back?", and last, but not least "How to write with a Dip Pen while balancing an AK-47 on your lap, and holding an armed grenade as the zombies pound on the door?"

I mean seriously, Guns and fountain pens!

What next, Rape and Fountain Pens, Child Abuse and Fountain Pens, How can I put Napalm in a Fountain Pen?

p.s. I happen to like guns and have used them, but find this topic to be an intellectual toilet water mark from FPN's usual standards.

Writing with pen and ink, is an endeavour both stimulating and cathartic.

Certainly, used offensively, a pointed object can inflict lethal injury. Nowever,

the ability to incapacitate quickly (lethal or not) is key to defense against attack.

The viciousness and brutality of fighting with a pointed or edged weapon is beyond

the mindset of most people.

Then there is the scene in Indiana Jones 3. Where Sean Connery squirts the nazi in the eyes with ink from his pen allowing them to knock him out.

My thought exactly Id hate to ruin a nib

A fountain pen nib is very fragile, which is why the use of too much pressure while writing can mess it up. If you tried to stab someone with it, the nib would probably get bent and trashed beyond repair, and the pen body might also snap. I doubt it would penetrate deep enough to kill the assailant, and he would then be peeved off and ready to inflict real harm on you.

I prefer .357 magnum for close encounters with criminals, which is why I carry a Ruger SP101 .357 magnum. Works much better than a Fine or Extra Fine nib.

Ball-point pens are only good for filling out forms on a plane.

When Caesar was attacked he wounded his son Brutus with the "stilus", this was the writing equipment of the time. Actually Caesar did not survive.

Today I reported someone threatening my life and I had to run this time as I didn't have my pen on me.

However I asked the police if I could use the pen as a weapon and they said that if I could justify it to the court then it would be up to the judge to decide depending on the circumstances.

However I worry that the guy may have a knife so if I had to attack I would want to aim for the windpipe or aorta otherwise how could it really stop someone that is trying to kill me and is likely armed with a knife?

The other question would be where would you attack first? ... The eyes or throat?

I was thinking that the first strike would need to disable them and "neutralise the threat" so to speak to prevent them getting a knife out.

Also I was thinking would a fountain pen or ballpoint work better?

As a weapon of last resort, sure, a fountain pen might be better than nothing, but I responded "no" because I always have a more effective weapon within reach.

What exactly am I going to do with an FP as a weapon? Whip out my Kaweco and the opponent dies of laughter? Does nobody believe in a good old fashioned fist fight? Should I start carrying a Pilot G2 to lend out to people who want to borrow my FP and a Bic Crystal for people who want to permanently borrow my FP? I don't think I own a single FP that would be as effective as my fist as a weapon on the fly. To quote a movie - If you are going to fight, clash!!!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
