Imperial Inlaid Nib

pendulous

Recommended Posts

I have just acquired a very nice Sheaffer Imperial Touchdown. I have not handled one of these for many MANY years and cannot remember if the upwards curve of the nib above the feed is correct. The nib looks fine and writes fine (a little dry) - no obvious distortions of it's lines - just seems to curve quite a bit??

The feed is a little to the side - how does it come out as I would like to align it correctly with the nib.

Many thanks for any help.

Imperial nibs are supposed to turn up at the end.

You have to remove the connector (threads) to pull the feed. The 0-ring inside should be replaced if the writing unit is opened. Don't do this though unless you are comfortable using heat. It's easy to melt the area around the pressure ring where the tabs come through.

Thanks - I just needed that wee bit of confirmation - much appreciated. The nib looks like new - no tip wear, although the barrel and cap were commensurate with age wear but polished up nicely. As previous poster suggests - I'll leave well alone despite the feed being a wee bit out.

I just looked at mine and it has the up-turned nib. It looks does look unusual. I thought someone must have pressed too hard on the nib, but, as Ron Z said, it's normal.

Sheaffer did not always do a good job of centering the feed under the nib, and it's easy to notice because of the squared off end of the feed. As long as there is good "coverage" of the slit, the pens seem to work fine. Getting that nib apart is indeed a booger of a job.

Nice pen!

I had a go at opening up the hood but had to abandon attempt before I wrecked the pen - in fact my use of heat got me close to meltdown - some ripple marks which I managed to polish off of the section. I suspect that a previous opening up has been secured with super glue!!

Thanks for the info - I appreciate your help.

It doesn't take super glue to make it tough to get these open. On some pens they used a thread sealant, on some pens they used a white glue that releases with heat... note my comments above. Maybe I should have suggested sending it to a qualified repair person. It takes experience to get them apart without cracking or melting the section.

Black writing units with gold nibs in particular are in scarce supply. I have others, but precious few black. Oh, and Sheaffer is charging $90 for what they do have.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
