Anyone Tried Palomino Blackwing Luxury Notebooks?

Hi all,

Hoping for a review or another suggestion.

I recently made my own traveler's notebook (Midori-like) and am on a quest for paper. Currently I am using Moleskine Cahier notebooks, but I need something much more FP friendly. My ideal would be 8 1/4 x 5 with a soft cover, FP friendly, and not too white. I find a lot of notebooks that are just a bit too wide (5 1/2"). This finally brings me to my real question...Has anyone tried Palomino Blackwing Luxury notebooks? They seem to meet all the right specs but I can find no reviews. Any other suggestions warmly welcome.

Thanks.

have not tried it. You could order one of the refills ($21.95) and use that to do your own review. If you really like it, and especially if you can track any business they received as a result of your review, you could probably negotiate either a significant discount or a freebie - new one.

The only thing to lose is the money and the time. Your choice.

If you really don't want to go that route, contact oone of the other sites and ask/encourage them to do a review.

Try the Banditapple Carnet notebooks. They have a version that is 8.25 x 5.11 inches. The paper is fountain pen friendly and the price is very reasonable ($5.50). They are available from Goulet Pens in the U.S. I like the handy size (8.25 x 4.33 inches, $4.50).

Thanks for the replies. I will certainly try the Banditapple. It may take a little bit but will also work toward contributing a review of the blackwing...though I am not certain that my limited knowledge/experience with good paper will be conducive to a premium write-up.

  • 10 months later...

I just received the Palomino Blackwing notebook. It's about 7.5 by 9.5 inches, roughly the same size as Levenger's Notabilia notebooks. Midway between the international A-5 (too small for me) and the A-4 (too big for a notebook).

- Smooth cream-colored paper. Likes a fountain-pen nib. 100 gsm...so it's heavier than most of the A-5 notebooks.

- No blotter-effect, no see-through. Pen = Parker 51 medium (shaped by Greg Minuskin to a medium wetness...not dry and not a gusher)

- Opens almost flat

- Grid is smaller, maybe 5-to-the-inch, compared to the Notabilia's 4-to-the-inch

- Better than Noteletts, better than Leuchterm, maybe slightly better than Notabilia, which I have used since 2000. Palomino is good enough that I will try it as my work notebook.

- Price: about $17 from Pencils.com, mores expensive other places. Notabilia grid is two-for-$15 just now and the Palomino might not be twice as good as the Notabilia, but it seems better than all the others.
