Pens were made for writing so I had to choose number one. I use only fountain pens and nothing else. My wife calls me a pen snob. java script:emoticon(':D')

My pens are for writing, cars are for driving and watches are for wearing. Yes, I collect but only I use them for what they are intended.

Write, write, write. If a pen will not be a daily user I don't consider obtaining it. If I get a pen that is not comfortable for daily use, it gets traded or sold.

I do a lot of writing: journalling, study notes, lesson plans, monthly newspaper column, notecards and letters, etc. All of it is much more enjoyable using my fountain pens.

A good bit of my work is with words and I write them all with my fountain pens. I've used fp's pretty much exclusively for 10 years or so. The accumulation is up around 175 now and they've all been in the rotation at some point. I'm probably down to 30 or so in the rotation right now with 20 of those inked. I might sign a receipt with a bp once a month or so; rarely more. I use a pencil a few times a year. My only time away from fp's is final drafts on the PC.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

I use a FP every day, although I find that I require other instruments as well. Either due to the paper not working with FP ink, or sketching with a pencil. I picked #2 because it would be impossilbe for me to use only a FP, it just doesn't work on all surfaces that I need to write on. I do, however, always use one when I'm able. I enjoy them too much to not use it.

Yes! There's also that almost-medical aspect to using them. I couldn't write nearly as much as I do now with a ballpoint or even a pencil, which is something else that I do enjoy using.

I write almost exclusively w/ FPs. I have been using Pilot disposables as the "everyday" pen around my desk so that i'm not upset if one gets lost or "walks" away -- which, BTW, FPs don't seem to walk away as often as BPs do! :P And, i do not like RB (although... MAYBE... i just haven't found the "right" RB...yet...)

This semester i'm going to load a bunch of Sheaffer school pens with different color inks to leave around my desk. Should improve my daily attitude!

I ink, therefore I am.

I voted option2. I use my fountain pans a lot but I also use bics some times and some faber pencils. Otherwise when I am at home I exclusively use a fountain pen.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Hi,

I use all of my fountain pens. I don't really have a big collection, and my collection is split into two sets, one is a set of pens is used for my calendar. Those have different colour inks in them and are all Japanese fine pointed pens. (Yes, I write a lot in my calendar and I colour code). The other pens are for general writing, and all but one of them (a Parker 61) are Italian pens. I have less that 20 pens all together, and that gives me certain pens which I use, all for different occasions. I used to have a few hundred pens, but I'm glad that I broke off my addiction (I needed help to overcome it--see, you can't stop any time you want).

I voted the second one. Love my FPs and use them a lot, but I also have a few RBs that I like, in particular a few RBs that use fountain pen ink. Those are grand! I'll also dabble with metallic gel pens because I love sparkly, too. :D

The hardest part is taking a pen out of use (even if just for a while). I love them all and really enjoy using them. I am not a collector in the sense of merely possessing something (pretty much true of other things, too).

My journals and notes are colorful because I tend to trade off pens when writing in them, sometimes every paragraph.

Just put some MB chocolate scented ink into my Pelikan white tortoise - a real aesthetic treat! :)9

I should mention that I don't have many vintage - a couple of Parker 51s that I like - though maybe a few that I bought new way back when might be considered such by now. I would love to find an Estie dip pen with the kind of nib a regular FP has.

There are a couple of cases where I still use a ballpoint or rollerball.

1. I forget to take my Lamy Safari with me to work.

2. I need to write on a styrofoam carry out container.

My pens rarely fuss at the occasional piece of thermal paper or carbonless duplicating form I need to sign.

Three things always go with me when I leave the house: my Lamy Studio, my wallet, and my pocket knife. I still use other pens if it has to be permanent (don't have any permanent ink yet), if my Studio will not write well on a particular surface, or if I just don't want to get my pen dirty.

I use my fountain pens for pretty much everything from writing grocery lists to taking class notes for grad school. I even used my pens to take calculus exams back in the day. It's very rare that I don't have my Pelikan within arms reach any time of the day.

J-san, I like your School Rumble avatar. It's nice to have another manga fan in the group. I think that makes four or five of us now.

Actually, I've found Parker 51's with medium nibs seem to do well on those slick credit card receipts. The only thing is you have to wait a few seconds for the ink to dry, otherwise the clerk ends up with ink on their fingers! (I went from getting "Hey, cool pen" to "Yuck, the ink stays wet!")

Just having been recently re-introduced to the fountain pen, I haven't written much with it, but the more I do, the more I want to.

Welcome back! :)

And you will find that with the enthusiasm of the pen community and awesome information exchanging, you will be hard pressed not to write with anything else.

:D

The amazing (and scary thing for the wallet), is that the fountain pen arena has become huge... the vintage pens stand their ground while new ones join in. I've tried to stay away from buying new ones, but there are some you just can't resist (like the Pilot Vanishing Point!). What kinds of pen(s) do you have?

I chose answer #2, although I almost never use a RB or a BP. I take my FPs when I leave the house. Also, I compose and edit with one of my fountain pens. This is what a FP is for: portability and fast writing for when the ideas come thick and fast. I write the final copy with a dip pen and a vintage nib. That way, I can match the pen to the ink and paper I'm using.
