The models shown in this thread are made of ebonite covered with urushi lacquer. The "Tagayasan" Izumo models are made of the "tagayasan" wood covered with synthetic lacquer.

Ahh ok thanks, one of the retailers is confused, stating that all the models were wood. I'm surprised the wood and ebonite pens are such similar weight, Indian Rosewood (more common name than Bombay or iron wood) is fairly dense and heavy.

As I got a query from a FPN member, I thought I would post these pictures with the ruler.

I have the sora-tamenuri (green) in fine and the ironwood glossy in medium. Both are exceptionally smooth writers. There are Very Large Pens that are meant to be used unposted. For anyone who's interested, Goulet has a single aka-tamenuri with a fine nib marked down to an attractive price.

Chattterley has a green one in medium nib for sale as well. Very good prices from reputable American dealers.

The red is amazing. I love how it comes through. It's so subtle, but very beautiful.

There is also a new Biwatame version. I had one briefly, but it leaked at the junction between section and brass threads and so went back for a refund.

Based on prior experience with Nayaya Writers and Platinum 3776 pens, I got it with a broad nib, and found it considerably broader than the others. That is another reason why I decided to return it.

A chart on Nibs.com shows that whilst Japanese medium and fine nibs are indeed one degree finer that the Western standard, this does not apply to broad and double broad nibs which are largely comparable to Western widths.
