I have now collected the 3 Izumo Tamenuri pens: Kuro (Black) F, Aka (Red) M and Sora (Green) B.

Kuro Tamenuri M nib

Presentation: a nice sized wood box with "Izumo" written on it. No issue with this presentation.

The overall feel:

This pen is large. But, as it is made of ebonite, it is not heavy. So, I can use this pen as if it is a smaller pen. The pen's finish is very smooth and I can sense Platinum's craftmenship in making this pen with such details and care.

The nib is M. A very smooth M nib, which is not a surprise. Usually, an F nib is a hit or miss when it comes to smoothness. The writing sample below is based on the dip test. The nib / feed has sufficient capillary action as you can see. The Izumo pens are so nice looking; so, I am still hesitating to make it a part of the rotation.

The writing samples of the Tamenuri trio.

From the top to the bottom: Kuro's M, Aka's F and Sora's B. All based on dip test.

Here are the pictures to see a subtle difference in shades among the trio.

Congratulations on acquiring such a fine collection.

Which color do you like?

Both the green and the red.

Do you have Nakaya pens? If yes, how do the level of craftsmanship compare?

All of them are nice. I like the green especially the most

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Your last picture shows what looks like a wood-grain pattern. What is it ?

That appears to be the Ironwood Dark Gloss version. Nibs.com

I like the red and green Tamenuri. As much as I generally like Tamenuri, in this case I think I actually prefere the dark Ironwood. Though I'm not sure whether or not I'd like the heavily tapered section and step up to the barrel.

I prefer the red. Platinum is gaining more and more of my attention, although I own only one Platinum pen. Thanks for such an excellent comparison.

I thought all the Izumo were wood underneath the lacquer? Which models are ebonite?

I'll take one of each. They're all lovely!

Seriously, I think I like the black the best.

I thought all the Izumo were wood underneath the lacquer? Which models are ebonite?

The models shown in this thread are made of ebonite covered with urushi lacquer. The "Tagayasan" Izumo models are made of the "tagayasan" wood covered with synthetic lacquer.
