Lamy Safari Vs Ohto F-Spirit

Hey guys,

I have a dilemma... I currently have an Ohto Dude and a Lamy Nexx is on the way. I find that the Ohto Fine nib is a tad too thick for low quality paper (feathering), but in the general the nib is smooth and of good quality.

An extra fine nib would be handy to have and the Safari seems to be the benchmark for workhorse fountain pens...

I like the F-Spirit because of that awesome full cigar shape though...

What would YOU do? Thanks :/

By the way are Lamy Fine nibs too thick/wet for low quality exercise books? Thanks.

Can I ask, what ink are you using in the Dude? If you are using the OHTO ink that comes with it, it will be just a little on the wet side. Of course, you could always try a different ink as the viscosity change may help.

I have a Ohto Spirit, one of my first fountain pens when I was testing the waters, and I love it. While I agree that the nib isn't as fine as some of the equivalent Japanese pens, for instance the Sailor Clear Candy, I don't experience the feathering you are referring to. Yes, I have run across paper that won't take a fountain pen without feathering, but if the paper is really bad, it won't matter what pen, nib, or ink you use.

My suggestion would be to get the Ohto Spirit, a converter, so you can play around with ink mixtures, and buy an spare EF nib for the Lamy Nexx.

I've also found turning the Spirit over and writing with the top of the nib produces a finer line.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I use Parker Quink Black with the Ohto. The line it produces seems like this (cross section): o rather than this _. It's a wet but fine line that seems to feather a tad on copy paper. But it's not really a problem.

Yes, in any case I will be getting another extra fine nib at some point, thanks :)
