pastel/light blue ink?

goldkiwi

Recommended Posts

I've been studying all the swatch charts out there in search of the right ink, but just when I think I've found it, the reviews of the ink on the forum tell me otherwise! I'm looking for a lighter/pastel blue ink, but not one that's cyan/light turquoise. I guess my "ideal blue" would be somewhat on the grey end of the spectrum, not unlike the colours represented on this forum page (default colours, I guess). Does such a colour exist, or am I out of luck on this one?

Or the Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue. It is nice calm pale blue color, and I find I like this one more and more...

cheers,

I second Pelikan Blue, but has it gotten darker since they changed formulation?

Another one that comes to my mind is Herbin Bleu Mysotis (?sp).

What about Scheaffer Skrip blue-black?

That looks more grey than blue in the three different pens I have it in at the moment.

J. Herbin's Bleu Myosotis is pretty light too! I second the old Quink Washable Blue recommendation.

kissing- sorry for being such a newbie, but I'm not exactly sure how to tell if my pen is "wet" or "dry"... I'm also using a fine point, if that makes any difference.

M4R1N4, I was considering Bleu Myosotis based on the company's colour charts, but when I saw a swatch of it, the colour looked quite dark, and some reviews seem to also suggest that it's a darker blue...

Is the Quink Washable Blue still available, or is it a "vintage" ink that is no longer in production? I've heard mention of old and new formulas so I'm not sure... Any recommendations on where to find this ink?

Herbin's Blu Azure (sp?) is an extremely light blue. It's a very nice color but in my opinion, it's too light for everyday use.

Keep in mind that ink swatches are often done by Q-tips, and seem darker than when you use it in pens. Especially if you use fine points.

goldkiwi, I have both of these inks, though only a small amount of the Herbin. If you would like I can mail you samples of each one, and if you like the Quink I can send you a vial of it. My PMs have been acting up lately (actually, my workplace restricts this website so I cannot always use PMs). If you want to, send me an email at marina.gonzales@gmail.com and let me know your address!

I agree with Scribbler, Noodler's Luxury Blue definitely flows out a light to light-med blue for me. (In fact, I wish it was darker.) It's a good choice, too, because it's one of the 'bulletproof' inks.

M4R1N4, thank you, I've sent you an e-mail :D

Scribbler and Tricia, interesting to hear about the Noodler's Luxury Blue- I had thought that it was a medium to dark blue, but I may also have to give that a try. I've been curious about these waterproof inks!

Annie, I've been wondering about Britannia's Blue Waves as well, but I thought that it might be too bright/cyan from the written samples I've seen. Thanks though.

penspender, thank you for the link- it's nice to be able to do side by side comparisons of different brands!

Taki, that's a good point about how the swatches were made. Do you find that the fine nibs lay down a lighter line than the wider ones? I suppose that's to be expected since the wider nibs probably put down more ink, but somehow I thought that the fine lines would have more intensity... not sure where I got that idea from!

Benjamin McFerret, do you find the Bleu Azure to be as cyan/light turquoise as the swatches suggest?

It depends on the pen I use it in. Sometimes it looks slightly like turqoise but most of the time it does not. I would describe it as a light sky blue.

I happen to have both the Herbin Bleu Myosotis and Noodler's Luxury Blue so I did a quick scan for comparison. The scan looks a bit lighter than they actually are, but both are on the pale side and quite pleasing to my eye. This was cheap paper so the Luxury Blue feathered a bit.

If you can find it anywhere, Noodler's Boston Brahmin Blue is about the wimpiestlightest blue I know of.

Side-by-side scan, color corrected as best I can on my monitor. List added so that this message will come up if anyone searches on "Blue":

Noodler's Ottoman Azure

Noodler's American Eel Blue

Private Reserve Midnight Blues

Levenger Cobalt Blue

Parker Quink Washable Blue

Lapindigo Mix

Private Reserve Lake Placid Blue

Noodler's Boston Brahmin Blue

Noodler's Iraqui Indigo

Noodler's Legal Lapis

The last two probably don't belong on a blues comparison page, but it's my notebook and I can do it any way I want! :P

goldkiwi, since you're doing an Atramentis order from missing-pen, did you see the Pinocchio ink? They say it is "sky blue."

BobR and BillTheEditor, thank you for posting scans of your samples! I wonder if my monitor needs calibration, as the Luxury Blue and Bleu Mystosis still seem quite deep... I do like the tone of the Luxury Blue, though!

BillTheEditor, is Boston Brahmin Blue one of the limited edition Noodler's inks? Looks like a rather pretty sky blue on my monitor, but I don't think it's quite what I'm looking for... Everyone's suggestion of the Quink Washable Blue looks like a good contender, though!

sonia_simone, I didn't see that particular ink until you mentioned it- I was mostly obsessing over the scented inks and the ones made from beer and wine  If it's the same colour as the regular sky blue, then it might be a bit too bright for my liking... Yes, I'm horribly picky :P
