His & Hers -- Wedding Present Recommendation?

MarneM

Recommended Posts

My best friend of around twenty years is getting married in early August. This is her second wedding, and she has owned her own house for over ten years now, so she already has most of the essentials that people might commonly put on their gift lists.

She is an English Teacher (7th grade), and her husband is a Pastor, so I thought it might be fun to get them some sort of His & Hers matching fountain pens as a gift.

They would need to be in the price range of under $50 each, so under $100 total.

Does anyone have any ideas for something that might fit this description? They're more traditional, so nothing too metallic or modern looking would be my preference.

I would appreciate any suggestions anyone could offer!

Might want to get them each a Safari in their favourite color...or black and white...

Recently, I attended the wedding of my fiancee's best friend whom I had never previously met. Her husband saw me pull out a TWSBI 540 to jot a note, and he told me that he and his wife were both just starting in the fountain pen hobby. They both got matching TWSBI 540s with 1.1 stub nibs. They were thrilled!

For your first pen, you should buy a Pelikan m200 or a TWSBI 540.

For vintage, get a Parker Vacumatic or a 51.

Once you go Vac, you never go back.

Yes, I've been drinking.

Ahem. Do you know whether the bride and groom like FPs? That's worth considering, given that 99.997% of the population (yes, I derived that number scientifically) don't use 'em and are probably not interested in 'em.

In other words, matching BPs or RBs might be a safer bet. Or steak knives.

Would disagree. 93.22298% of the population use throw-away ballpoints. If they are willing to try a BP that takes refills then they are probably willing to try a fountain pen that also needs refills.

Look at the Waterman Hemisphere, Parker and Lamy ranges, and maybe they will use whatever choice you make to sign the Register.

Yes, I took the time to consider that concern and spoke about it with my husband. I should have been more clear -- I know that the bride will like the gift, as she has been my best friend for most of my life, and we are very close.

I don't know her intended husband as well, so that is a bit more of an enigma to me. But I believe him to be a genuine enough person that he will appreciate the sentiment, even if it's not his favorite gift.

Great recos - no need to continue IMHO

The original post requested "nothing too metallic or modern looking". I think both the Lamy Safari and TWSBI 540 fail in this regard.

Would you like a pair of the same pens or the same model, but perhaps a different color? If the latter, I recommend the Pilot Preras. http://www.jetpens.com/Pilot-Prera-Fountain-Pens/ct/410

If you do get these, get the Medium nibs. The fines are sometimes scratchy.

Looking for a Sheaffer Sovereign II Gray Pearl with an EF nib.

Yes, thank you. The Lamy Safari and the TWSBI 540 are too modern-looking for the sensibilities of my friends. I'm going to have to up my price range, I think. I'm also considering Chinese pens, as I have had a good experience with mine, and I can get something that looks more traditional without paying some of the prices that are simply beyond me.

Oh, for infinite money.

I will consider the same pen in different colors, certainly!

I would recommend the waterman hemisphere (perhaps in black and stainless steel). I know they can be found withen your price-point but the problem is finding them. Good luck

If you are willing to raise the price range a bit, how about a pair of Pelikan M200s? They are not metallic, not modern in appearance, in fact look like prototypical FPs. And Pels usually work well right out of the box.

It is out of the price range unfortunately, but a win at the Pools might justify a Cartier Trinity FP and ballpoint. With the Trinity rings of rose gold for love, yellow gold for eternity and white gold for fidelity they are a good choice. It is a wonder some of the companies have not manufactured pens for wedding services , other than great flowing quills.

Hmmm, I found a couple that seem to be right around the range of my mortgage payment. Think my husband would be upset?

What did you think about the colored Pilot Preras?

I like it -- I'm trying to decide how I feel about it, if it might be a little too bright. But the color range is nice, and I like the profile.

It's not outside your price range by very much. 10up.de has them in marbled and black at 45.25 EUR, approx. 55 USD. I find them more impressive in hand than other pens at the same price point.
