Parker 51 Filling System?

Just received a Dark blue with silver cap Parker 51 fountain pen which I purchased off ebay - my first foray into second hand older pens, opened the barrel and I can't seem to remove the filler 'cartridge' - I assume this is normal???

The aerometric version of the 51 does not have a cartridge to remove. That is actually an ink sac protected by a filler cover and press bar. Don't try to remove it without special tools or you might ruin the pen.

I assume this is an Aerometric "51", since I see no way to confuse the Vacumatic plunger under the blind cap as a 'cartridge'. At any rate unless this is a very late model that has the removable press bar filler assembly to accommodate removal and use of a cartridge, then yes that is normal. About the only thing you could remove would be the pli-glass sac's metal filler cover, and then only if it was friction fit and you yanked with a good amount of force (don't do if an amateur). This LINK has pictures of what the different versions of the "51" look like. The Aero and the Converter are about 3/4 and fully down the page respectively. Hope I helped.

Your photo helkps a lot.

It appears to be in good shape.

MY suggestion if to try filling the pen uinsing cler cool water, perhps with a 10% ammonia solution

Place in a small container, dip your pen , nib down while holding the filler tube in your have and proceed hold the filler and squeeze the filler bar 4 to 6 times which should fill the pen.

Remove from the solution squeese again and empty the poly bladder. If dark murkey color comes out repeat as above until it run 's clean.

If pen does not fill service by someone with proper tools nd equipemnt should be consulted.

The Aero 51's are pretty straight forward and unless some used Indi Ink and did not clean it out the pen should only need a good purging as above described.

The origional poly sac could last a life time or 2.

Never use hot water on or in your pen.

Happy Writing

Just as a point of interest-- sometimes a good yank will remove the screw-down sac protectors

I didn't do it, but I had to fix it.

Sounds like you are done. Fill her up with ink and enjoy the ride. Just the problem of what ink to use. We all have our prferences, mine is Diamine or Watermans.

:yikes: Oooooh No! Sorry to see that. I guess this should be a lesson to treat all filler covers as screw on for removal purpose. Twisting counter-clockwise trying to unscrew it is better than pulling and snapping off the sac nipple on the connector any day. You didn't know your own strength (or perhaps the weakened state of your pen's material).

I suspect whoever did this did it relatively early in the pen's life-- that breather tube was in amazingly good shape.

Blimey, whoever did that must have had their porridge.

:ltcapd: :roflmho: so true

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
