Pilot Iroshizuku Yu-Yake

As this is my first ink review, I figured I'd stick to a review form rather than go free-form.

A couple of notes about the review:

1. The Water Test - The ink was allowed a little over thirty minutes to dry, and then I wiped the upper left side with a wet finger, and put three drops of water across the right half.

2. The ink comparisons were written with a dipped Noodler's Ahab, thoroughly cleaned between each ink.

3. As for the 6.5/10 flow rating...This is not a positive/negative rating on a scale, 10 is the wettest ink on the planet, and a 1 is drier than the Sahara. Truth be told, Yu-yake has a terrific flow, and so far, I have not experienced any start up issues, nor has it come gushing out onto any paper.

4. I apologize for my horrible penmanship. I am trying to work on it, though the past academic year has not left me with a great deal of time.

Thanks for looking!

This is a beautiful ink - thanks for the review!

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

My pleasure!

Now that I have it loaded in my favorite pen, I have been looking for anything to write with it. I still can't get over how well behaved it is.

Hi,

Congratulations on your first Ink Review! :clap1:

I think you've captured the essentials of the ink.

yu-yake is one of my small array of Orange inks. Typical of the iroshizuku series, it does have excellent manners and offers an enjoyable writing experience: those short happy notes may be extended to long happy letters!

Oh, I reckon your penmanship is fine - no need for an apology!

Bye,

S1

Thanks Sandy!

I am not sure why, but I have been tending to lean towards orange inks lately, though I am not sure quite why. Not so much the super-saturated oranges that Diamine is putting out, but ones that shade well. This certainly fits the bill. I am really glad I added it to the collection.

Now, to just not spend all of my money on Iroshizuku inks!

Hi,

You're welcome!

It seems we favour those Orange inks that have high shading potential. Noodler's Apache Sunset is a notable example tour de force of a shading ink in this colour range.

Agreed, I got a sample of Apache Sunset along with the bottle of Yu-Yake, and 'tour de force' is a great way to describe its capabilities. There will be a bottle of that in the near future as well!

I just got my bottle of Yu-Yake and put it in my Lamy Astra 1.5 italc. I really injoy the way it works in that pen even though I'm still getting used to the nib :P

Can anyone tell me how this compares to J. Herbin Indien Orange? It is beautiful.

He came down from heaven and was made man.

Great review! Yu-Yake seems exactly in the middle from Edelstein Mandarine and Orange Indien.

Thanks! Also, thanks for the heads up on the Mandarine and Indien, two oranges I haven't gotten my hands on yet.

Thanks crazystan!

Is it my imagination, eyesight, or monitor? Does the Sailor Jentle Tangerine seemingly have the crispest lines of them all, with Yu-Yake close second followed by Noodlers Summer Tanager? There's very little feathering in all three to my eye, but the Sailor seems somehow cleaner?

And does less feathering equate to more shading ability? I've only been experimenting a short time with ink varieties.

Again, well done for a first (or if it had been a hundredth) review.

So, I took 3 macro photos (10x), one of each ink to test your hypothesis. Looking at the photos, it seems that the Summer Tanager has the least feathering of the three, though it is easily the most saturated of the included inks. Then, it seems that the Yu-Yake and Apricot feather about the same. You can certainly judge these for yourself.

As for the relationship between feathering and shading, I am not sure I can speak directly to that. Maybe someone else who stumbles across this thread can speak to that.

Nice review of a favorite ink...thanks!

Thanks!

Sure thing...

There are a few ink review forms in a pinned thread at the head of the Ink Reviews forum.

That is some seriously awesome shading. And here I thought I had enough orange inks. This one certainly justifies the price!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
