Fuyu-Syogun And Diamine Graphite

recenlty got some gray samples from Goulet, two being Fuyu-syogun and Diamine Graphite. Loaded them into similar Pelikan pens and began using them. To my surprise, they looked exactly alike--a dark gray/green. The Fuyu-syogun looked nothing like Immoteus or Woodworker's samples and the only way I could tell the Iroshizuku and Diamine apart was under a water rinse where the Diamine washed away and the Iroshizuku did not.

So am I in the minority here?? Will be ordering some more Fuyu from Goulet in hopes I can get the blue-gray that Immodeus saw in his review

I'll buy that. Mine look stunningly similar too. But I can easily tell them apart by their prices.

I have bottles of both and use both regularly. To me, they aren't alike at all. Fuyu-syogun is a blue gray, whereas Diamine Graphite is a greenish gray.

Try using them in a broad nib, perhaps? I think Fuyu-syogun really benefits from that.

Failing that, all I can suggest is sample variation.

One of the Pelikans was equipped with a Binder cursive italic nib--the Italifine. The other nib was a medium. I'll buy the sample variation theory, though. I'll just order more samples.

I have a bottle of fuyu-syogun and a sample of graphite, and they look very different to me. As Laura N says, I see fuyu-syogun as blue-gray and graphite as a deeper gray with green undertones. They're both nice inks.

Here's a side by side scan from my sample sheets:

well this is very interesting. WIll most definitely order more samples tomorrow from Goulet. I must say, though, that the sample of the fuyu-syogun posted by geoduc looks very similar to one of my vintage Waterman blue-blacks, which is a fantastic shader and is permanent as well. Will try another sample, though, and see what happens.

Hi,

I do not have have Diamine Graphite, but offer this 3-2-1 pass swab sample of fuyu-syogun on the ever-so-slightly cool HPJ1124 paper :

I have noticed that the ink is somewhat translucent, so the base-tint of the paper will influence the perceived colour. Even a natural white, such as Rhodia, can give f-s a nudge away from its native Blue-Gray colour.

I would never have thought of these two inks being the same: my bottles look like geoduc's scans.

I don't have any, but isn't Kirisame a darker Iroshizuku grey? Does it look like Graphite? Maybe there was a mislabeled sample. Anyway, interesting.

Kiri-same is not darker so much as more of a neutral grey, whereas Fuyu-syogun is decidedly grey/blue when you see them side by side.

I have swabbed (3-2-1) the grey inks I have to hand, paper is Conqueror Wove 90gsm Brilliant White. I have also beefed up the saturation to a scary level to show the undertones.

Whoa! That's cool! Thanks for the clarification with Kiri-same.

I'd say the last sample with the purple undertone is Sailor Chu-shu (one of the LEs - Winter, IIRC), as opposed to the now discontinued regular production Sailor Grey, which was very similar to the Omas Diamine Grey above.
