If you are not doing something last minute and have a bit of time to custom order something, one consideration would be a Rosetta with a pendleton point. The line variation this pen can give is something that she will immediately appreciate.

 

Its a gorgeous pen that comes in many colors, and it writes like a dream. Its quite a nice value for $99.

 

You would need to contact member pb2 to purchase one. I would recommend asking for the butter line stub instead of the cursive italic, its much easier for a beginner to write with.

I 'converted' my wife to fountain pens with a Parker 51 as a 'no reason, I was just thinking about you' gift. The 51 is a true classic - timeless, functional (and how!) and a beautiful design. You might want to give that one some thought.

May I suggest the Pilot Prera? I have one and it is an almost petite size with a great reputation and several colors.

Thank you again for your recommendations I've been looking into each to see which ones I can get easily in France (with various degrees of success). On the french fountain pen websites there seem to be a lot of Oberthur, Enzo varini and Inès pens which fall into my price range, there are no reviews on here for them, are they no good or just unknown outside of France?

The Inoxcrom Poeme is a nice size and some of the exterior finishes are quite feminine.

Perhaps a good question to ask before you get too deep is about her writing style. A lot of pen newbies will go for a certain look when they should also be paying attention to the way the pen writes. Does she write with fine or medium lines? (I've simply found a cheap fine lined pen and asked my gf how she liked the way it looked on a piece of paper). Does she use heavy pressure when writing? (check journals or anything she's written on for this). Fountain pens take a little bit of getting used to, so if she doesn't have anyone to give her guidance on using one and it doesn't write well for her, she may not use it often.

 

Don't forget to get ink! :-)

You can look at sellers in the UK and have them ship with tracking - there'll be no extra tax. I can highly recommend both Andy's Pens and The Writing Desk.

 

Another alternative (for Japanese pens) is Engeika on eBay. His prices are reasonable and the pens will usually slip through customs unnoticed.
