Lamy Vista For Taking Notes In High School?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if a F nib Safari will be that much smoother than a G2, but I've used fountain pens since I started high school up until now (last semester of grade 10). All my pens work fine on note paper, but depending on the ink, you may not be able to write on both sides of the paper. Also the legal sized lined paper our school uses for "long answer test questions" is no better than tissue paper. Any stoke will feather, so I usually go back to a rollerball in those situations. A Safari is great to start, and along with the other advice, buy a converter and experiment with different inks!

“My two fingers on a typewriter have never connected with my brain. My hand on a pen does. A fountain pen, of course. Ball-point pens are only good for filling out forms on a plane.”

An EF Lamy will write something between the 0.5 and 0.7mm Pilots, if my memory serves right.

pilot .7 is what i use :D

alright so i ordered off jetpens a ef vista and 2 converters...one inside the pen and another just in case it runs out and im not at home

and then i bought a bottle of noodlers bp black off goulet...wish goulet had free shipping :( shipping almost costed me half the bottle itself

hopefully my handwriting will improve....my cursive is pretty bad and my print is even worse :S

I'm not sure how the two converters will help give you more ink supply. You can't really bring an extra converter filled with ink outside when you're traveling unless you somehow are able to plug off the hole near the top so the ink won't leak out. If you think you may use up more than a converter's fill of ink, you'd have to look at buying a box of cartridges. Noodler's black is a good choice for school.

I'm pretty sure they were confused. You can (usually) only fit one converter in a pen barrel, while a normal sized pen can hold two cartridges at the same time, with one as a backup.

The Lamy proprietary cartridge holds a lot of ink. Just 1 will fit in the body of the Safari.

International, short carts may be piggy back fit into the body of some cartridge pens, but not Safari.

One of the assets of Safari is that the feed holds a lot of ink. If you were to give the cart a squeeze into a unprimed feed, it would basically hold nearly the volume of a short international cart before it would bulb a drop out of the nib. Once the cart is empty, you easily write another page before there's evidence of ink starvation. Also why when you lay your Safari down to listen to the lecture, the capillary action resumes at the touch to paper.

wait, so i can't bring a z24 converter as a refill in case i run out? only cartridges? omg thank you lol, i just canceled an order for a couple converters....

btw, approximately how long will a converter last? (how many pages of notes)

i will be taking six 50 minute classes a day, and all classes will require lots of note-taking

Using a fine or extra-fine nib, you should be alright to get through a whole day of school. I'm in graduate school and I can typically get through two days worth of classes. Just get into the habit of checking the ink level the night before so you don't show up with a dry pen. Eventually you may want to get a second pen to carry in your bag as a backup for those occasional days when you forgot to refill the night before.

I haven't used my Safari (EF) in a while, but I seem to recall it lasting around 8-10 sheets (not pages) of college rule paper before a refill. You should be fine if you just make a habit of refilling every night. This also means that ink stained fingers are more likely to be free of stains than if you fill in the morning

EDIT

If you need a good backup, I would suggest a Platinum Preppy - you can convert it to an eyedropper pen by placing an o-ring at the base of the threads, and fill the barrel directly (which gives you a very large ink capcity.) They're about $4 apiece, but they have fairly smooth nibs, good reliable flow, and have special caps that keep them from drying out for months at a time (excellent feature for an editing pen.) I actually prefer mine to my Safari/Vista.

You can't use a converter as a refill, but you could bring a bottle of ink, or a little plastic vial full of your favourite ink, around with you and just refill if you run out. It may look a bit odd in class though...

With an extra-fine nib, I can't see you running out of ink in a day. Say 2-4 pages (sides) of A4/letter paper per class, you should be fine. You can, and I do, carry around a couple of Lamy carts just in case, but it shouldn't be necessary to use them.

Since the Lamys generally come packaged with a cart, keep that as your backup in your backpack and then practice the habit of regularly checking your converter. I found it more than capable of handling several days of lectures, personally.

Nah, if you really want to look odd you should bring a clear eyedropper pen and refill with a syringe in the middle of class.

Then again, normal is so boring :roflmho:

I can not think a case in high school when the student will use a full international cartridge in note taking in one day.

I could believe that for college, but for high school a short cartridge per day should be enough. Then lamy's cartridges are closer to long international so you will get many days of writing out of them.

You can always refill it when you are at home from a bottle, and keep an extra cartridge with you during school hours just in case.

No, it's sealed. There will be a cardboard ring as a spacer when you get your Vista that prevents it from being punctured. All you need to do to use the cartridge is to remove the spacer, put the cartridge in, and screw the barrel on. The tightening will force the seal to break.

Hi, I have lots of fp's and also use them for taking notes during the lectures. It is good for my hand since rollerballs are horrible to write with (long writing sesions)

My notebooks cost about 0.80 euro and I haven't had any problems with them. A Lamy vista is a great choice! Good luck!

Cheers

To my knowledge, none of the Lamy inks are iron gall, or even waterproof, for that matter.

None of the Lamy cartridges are iron-gall or waterproof, but the old bottled Blue-Black is/was iron-gall.

Noodler's doesn't sell any inks in cartridge form - it's owner, Nathan Tardiff, is fairly committed to keeping costs down and trying to make the fountain pen competitive. Cartridges, in most cases, and considerably more expensive per volume than bottled ink.

You can always refill cartridges from a bottle using a syringe, however.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
