Montblanc 146G Silbergrau (Silver Striated)

INTRODUCTION:

Montblanc Meisterstück 146G Silbergrau (Silver Striated) -- Silbergrau is the only other [non-black] color besides the Grün (Green Striated) in the earlier Meisterstück series, and 146s are the largest as they come. Sorry! 149 fans.

These colorful 146s aren’t easy to find, so when they show up on the market they are always snatched up very quickly, particularly the Silbergrau. Ironically, for me, it's the Green Striated I don't have. But, I am not complaining, I am very happy with the Silver Striated.

Appearance & Design

I don't think there's much to say on the Meisterstück design, they're iconic as they come; the cigar shape made famous by MB has stood decades without much drastic change in its lines. The earlier Meisterstücks are tad smaller than their modern day counterparts (which I prefer), before everything became super-sized.

  • “146G” and “BB” imprinted on filler knob.
  • Ink level can be viewed through the striated lines.

Construction & Quality

This 146G is well built, and the quality is high. The silver striation is beautiful, and no shrinkage is felt.

Weight & Dimensions

This pen has some heft to it, it’s not heavy but it’s not light. I don’t have a right word for it, maybe “substance” will do?

Nib & Performance

This 146G is fitted with a BB nib that is wet and smooth, but not overly wet. It does write way too smooth though [yes, this is a complaint], words tend to glide on paper like a luxury car with a soft suspension riding on smooth pavement. The super smooth writing experience is not my preferred type of category, but hey, who am I to choose?! It's a Silver Striated 146G!

Filling System & Maintenance

Ink intake with the telescopic mech. is on the high side, comparable to the modern 149s. Piston mechanism can be taken apart for maintenance/replace the cork without much problems. However, DIY not recommended.

Conclusion

Beautiful “color” Montblanc; telescopic piston mechanism; vintage nib; celluloid construction...what else more to say? Find one first!

What a beautiful pen. I bought the Green Striated 146 last year. I used it everyday until I recently took it out of my rotation. I believe that the Silver Striated is one of the best looking pens ever produced. Thanks for posting the pictures Soot. You have great taste in pens! By the way is the pen next to it a 234 1/2 PL?

I showed your pictures this evening to my 15 year old son. He wrote down all the information on a pad of paper, looked at me and said, "someday I'm going to own a pen like that." I have to say I'm pretty inspired too - more than him, actually. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you all for the comments!

I had acquired this pen with a bit of luck, as at the time I was not particularly searching for it. It just showed up while I was browsing-- I hesitated for a VERY BRIEF moment and pulled the trigger. All I can say is, no regrets whatsoever.

@markiv -- No, you didn't miss the close-up; I didn't realize that moment until I finished posting. I will post a picture later tonight.

@specialk0449 -- Yes, it's a 234½ PL.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
