Vacumatic Colours?

This is probably going to make me sound like the total noob that I ultimately am...

I've got a couple of vacumatics and they're striped and translucent, but spotted a restored vacumatic on eBay going for what looked like a bit of a bargain price so put in a speculatively low bid expecting to be sniped at the last second, yet wasn't and "won" the auction..

It's described as a 1942 slender Maxima, has the blue diamond adorned cap, but is black and gold like the duofolds! It's got vacumatic written on the side, so I know the listing is correct, but I've tried researching more info, approximate values etc and haven't seen another on sale anywhere.

I presume it's not particularly rare, unlike the golden web, but was wondering as to how common it is?

Anyone else got one of these?

Picture nabbed from eBay :-) not the best quality shot though

The plain black ones are simply less sought after.

Mind you they write just as well

I'm not an expert on Vacs but it looks like a black in the Major size.

Not a rare pen but still a very fine writing instrument.

Enjoy using your new Vacumatic!

Ah, that explains it! It's just the first I've seen and at £30 I think it's a bargain!

I'm not fussed too much about rarity at the minute, it's still a stylish pen and will be a nice addition to my collection.

I think this would ussually have clear stirpes in between to view the ink.....maybe this one just doesn't have good barrel clarity. I think these are fairly common, and don't ussually hold higher prices than the colored models.

I bought one of these with translucent and black stripes, a 1946, for my daughter, because it was cheaper, but there are completely plain black ones too.

Is it in working condition? Which country was it made? USA, Canada or UK?

It's been restored and cleaned, new diaphragm and is in full working order (refund guaranteed through seller and eBay if not).

Was made in the US - I think Canadian ones are more sought after?

Then you did get a bargain. Yes the Canadians are the most sought after. I hope you enjoy your new pen.

^the only real reason you'd want a canadian vac over a US one is the greater likelihood (but by no means the certainty) of finding a flexible nib in a canadian vac. parker canada also introduced some interesting variants, probably discernible and important only to avid collectors (tighter spacing between three cap bands, vac majors produced until the early 50s, etc.).

The black ones are the lowest cost variety since most people want the iconic look of a Vac - the hundreds of colored/black stripes. The most sought after and highest price versions are the blue with black stripes. The next most desireable and highest cost are the red ones followed by the green ones. Then there is a tie between the brown and the grey colors. At the end are the black ones. Of course there are the variations within these colors - the ones with two or one striped jewels on the ends. The various size ones, the ones with the two-tone arrow nib and the one tone arrow nib. And then there is the place they were made with the Danish ones being the rarest and most sought after, then the Canadian ones, and finally the US ones. Thirty pounds for one in nice condition sounds about what the market is these days for the black ones.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
