I'm In Love With Platinum's F Nibs

Initially, I was a little bit at unease with a thought of getting an F nibbed Platinum as Platinum nibs are toward the finer end of the nib tip scale among different brands. But, I was very (pleasantly) surprised to find out Platinum's F nibs are so smooth with just the right amount of feedback. The ink flow is also just right; not too wet, not too dry. I have Platinum Sterling Silver, Celluloids, Makies, Briarwoods and Izumos. All of my Platinum nibs to date have been the winner for me and I did not get any scratchy F nibs so far. How about your experiences with Platinum Pen's nibs?

My collection: 149 EF/F/B/OBB, Collodi B/Twain F/Mann F, 146 M, Silver Barley F, M1000/M800 B'o'B/M800 Tortoise/Sahara/415 BT/215/205 Blue Demo, Optima Demo Red M/88 EF & Italic/Europa, Emotica, 2K/Safaris/Al-Stars/Vista, Edson DB/Carene BS, Pilot 845/823/742/743/Silvern/M90/Makies, Sailor Profit Realo M/KOP Makies/Profit Makies/Profit 21 Naginata MF&M/KOP/KOP Mosaiques/Sterling Silvers,Platinum #3776 Celluloids/Izumos/Wood pens/Sterling Silvers,YoL Grand Victorian, and more (I lost counting)

Uniformly superb has been my experience with both the 18k and steel nibs. Smooth, good feedback, enough of a hint of flex to make them feel expressive and, to me, Ideal flow and reliable start up.

I have only one F on my Jade celluloid. It is superb. Rigid to my liking, precise, with excellent flow and can be flipped over to a very smooth EF...

My 3776 Century was not really what I was expecting out of the box (too broad and not very smooth), but once I got the tines adjusted a bit, the pen became a very nice writer. I have been toting it around with me everywhere lately because I like the writing characteristics.

Lately, it's been the following in my pocket:

Pilot Capless Decimo F (smoothest pen I own)

Sailor Professional Gear Slim F

Platinum 3776 Century F

In the last few days, the Platinum has been getting the most attention.

Robert.

I have F, M and B for my Platinums. Naturally, M and B are much smoother compared to F. But, if I need to write in small letters, I would need to go for F as there is a noticeable jump in the line width from F to M.

Briarwood: F and M

Yakusugi: F

Celluloid: F and M (soon to have a B nib)

Tagayasan: B

Izumo Aka Tamenuri: F

Makie: F, M and B

Sterling silver: F

After testing Platinum's F nibs, I find them to be consistent in terms of line width and smoothness. I could not say this with other brands such as Lamy.

I am expecting a few more celluloid and briarwood pens.

What ink did you run in the F? A friend is coaxing me to try Japanese Fines and I'm leaning towards the 3776 Ribbed. I'm trying to see what folks like to use with the narrower Japanese nibs though I've taken the precaution of getting some Iroshizuku.

My ink of day has been Diamine Denim. So my comments on this thread is mainly based on that ink. I do my initial dip test with WM Florida Blue.

Compared to my Sailor's F nib, Platinum's F nibs are more smoother with less feedback. Ink flow is just right for my writing style. Compared to Platinum or Sailor's F nib, my MB's F looks like broad-tipped.

Makes me want to put a Platinum back into my rotation! :puddle:

Haven't written with one in a while and I have seven of them. Still don't have a wood pen... :hmm1: that might be my next pen purchase.

Erick

Using right now:

Jinhao 9019 "F" nib running Birmingham Firebox

Pilot Justus "M" nib running Diamine Oxblood

Montegrappa Elmo 02 "F" nib running Carmel Sea Blue

Sailor Cylint "F" nib running Dominant Industry Seaweed

Does the Denim still come across as a dark dungaree blue from the Fine? I recall Denim to be fairly free flowing so am thinking the saturation from an F should still be close to true.

I find that Diamine (Asa Blue, Damson), J. Herbin (Eclat de Saphir, Poussiere de Lune, rouille d'Ancre), and Noodlers (Bad Belted Kingfisher, Dragon's Napalm, Midway Blue) all lay down a wet enough line with the Platinum F tip to allow a tiny bit of shading. I also have the Platinum Mix Free set, which I do not like as much as the above brands. The F tip is not a finicky one to feed - EF may be.

I have a 3776 Samurai (aka ribbed) with and F nib, permanently loaded with Noodler's Heart of Darkness.

Very smooth.

Cheers,

Effrafax.

I just ordered a 18k B nib black platinum 3776 off the classifieds, literally minutes after I won another 3776 maestro EF (I accidentally thought it was a gold nib, turns out its GP SS).

Anyone have experience with either of these nibs, the EF steel and B 18k? I'd love somebody's opinion on them.

I have lots of pilots and Sailors, and thought I should round off the collection with a Platinum or two :)

For those of you upset by such things, please look away.

I confess I love Platinum/Nakaya F and EF so much that recently (thanks to Strang for his kindness!!) I put an F on

my Danitrio Fellowship pen. It's a perfect combination for me. happyberet.gif

That's a beautiful marriage! But I must admit I prefer Platinum's broader nibs. And I'm in love with their music nibs!
