Hey Shawn,

How long did you have to let the resin cure? Did you have to leave it for a bit in between layers?

This is exciting stuff! Thanks for sharing!

I let the first batch cure for about 2 days - but I think I may have used too much of the hardener.

I made 2 more big blanks last night that should be ready in a few days. I've got them clamped and will let them sit until next weekend when I have time to fool with them.

I used a little less hardener so it will take longer for it to cure.

If you are planning on rolling the material with the next version, perhaps you could simply wrap it around a core that can be removed later. Might cut down on the lathe work you have to do.

In that case, you might have to source some leather that hasn't been cured/tanned. I taught the Leatherworking merit badge for two summers, but there wasn't a requirement for an in depth knowledge of the tanning process. :P

Like yourself, I'm not sure.

It would be interesting to see a student pen made from laminated cardboard - totally utlitarian!

Well - the section and barrel are probably a lot tougher than the cap. I wouldn't be surprised if the cap slit if thrown against the floor. It should survive a fall with no problem though.

Amazing, a laminated Demin pen, bravo Shawn !

As already suggested, You could also wind the demin - already coated with epoxy - arround a small pin.

Then compress it radially in 2 halfs of a hard wooden block in which the approperiate lengthwise bore is made before cutting the block in two.

This will make your material much stronger

Just my 2 cents..

Francis

Another advantage to wrapping may be having it look identifiable as jeans
