I have the Rotring 500, Rotring 600 and the Rotring Rapid Pro pencils. My personal favorite is the Rotring 500, which you have, but a close second would be the Rotring 600.

If you are looking for something heftier, and you like the Rotring 500, I would suggest the 600.

Gentlemen, do not you have a problem with bent lead sleeve every time you accidentally drop a Rotring 600 because of its weight? That's the reason I do not use that otherwise beautiful pencil anymore.

I prefer the look of the rotring 600, it's a classic timeless look. Whilst I don't own/have never touched a rapid pro, if you are wanting it because of the retractable lead sleeve you should consider the rotring 800, very similar to the the 600 but with a retractable lead sleeve.

They are both excellent pencils and I use them for writing/note taking. The 600 is a classic looking pencil. I have both the silver and black in 0.35 (I had many lead breaks with rotring lead, Pentel seems to perform much better). To me, they look and feel like quality writing instruments. I enjoy using them. However, although not as pretty, I prefer using my rapid pro with the clip removed. It has a slightly wider grip, which suits me better. Also the retractable lead sleeve is a benefit. My negative points about the pencil are the use of chrome parts (it looks cheap in my opinion), the lack of lead indicator and the button at the top having a hole in the middle (the eraser is visible).

Overall, I very much like both models. I would suggest handling them both if at all possible.

Is it just mine, or the "GraphGear 1000 Pentel..." text wears off easily?

I have owned about 9 or 10 of them and I have lost them :( before the text has completely worn off. It doesn't wear off easily but in time it does as it is not engraved on, merely printed. But yeah not very easily, I currently own 7 of them XD and none of them are showing signs of rubbing off yet.
